JOINING THE MOVEMENT

HOUSTON — Optimum Security Professionals have joined the movement to recognize Juneteenth, the day commemorating the end of slavery in the U.S., as a company holiday.

According to company spokesperson and Director of Business Development, Shaunta’ Andrews, the decision was made by OSP President Marshall Isom.
OSP joins a growing the surge of businesses recognizing the holiday.
“It’s time we use our most powerful platform, entrepreneurship, to share our story,” Marshall said. “We’ve relied on others to educate the world about the great hardships our ancestors endured for us to be here today. No one can tell our story better than us and no one else is responsible for that story.”

Nationally, Google, Nike and Target have joined a growing list of companies around the country that have decided to give their employees time off for Juneteenth, June 19. According to juneteenth.com, Juneteenth is the oldest known celebration commemorating the ending of slavery in the United States.

The Emancipation Proclamation, freeing all who were enslaved in the United States was issued by President Abraham Lincoln in January 1, 1863. However, it took much longer for news to spread across the war-torn nation due to the occupation of the Confederate troops in Texas, Oklahoma, Louisiana and Arkansas.

Not until the surrender of General Lee in April of 1865 did the news reach enslaved persons by Union General Gordon Granger in Galveston, Texas on June 19, 1865, which was two-and-a-half years after the Emancipation Proclamation. Those who were enslaved were so happy about their freedom that they started dancing and celebrating, and generations have celebrated on June 19 ever since.

Annually on the 19th of June, descendants of American slavery would join with family and friends to take part in a wide range of activities like Rodeo, fishing, baseball, debate and cookouts. Juneteenth focuses on self-reflection, self-education and self-improvement.
