For I know the plans I have for you, declares the LORD, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. (Jeremiah 29:11 NIV)
A O-KAY GRADUATE
DALLAS — Joseph Anthony Kay is just a tender 16 years of age, yet he’s about to earn his high school diploma.
While that perhaps might not be a big deal for many, it sure is for Kay’s mother, Dr. Raechelle Anglin Kay.
Although the coronavirus pandemic crisis has all but nullified the official graduation plans of Joseph Kay, his mother, a gallery of family members, and a host of well-wishers have planned a forthcoming celebratory event to pay homage to Kay, a senior at Houston’s Fusion Academy, a private middle and high school institution that is comprised of grades six through 12.
“Since he can’t march, we will do a parade in the community for him,” Dr. Anglin Kay Kay said this week to kick off Making Headline News’ annual Salute To Graduate Tributes for 2020. “And we will be so happy when they drive by the house to acknowledge his name and accomplishments.

While COVID-19 has, in some aspects, has put a damper on the traditional year-end activities for graduating seniors nationwide, Joseph Kay, meanwhile, still made it count where it mattered most — in the classroom.
Having manufactured a cumulative grade point average of 3.2, Joseph Kay had become a fixture for Fusion Academy’s sound and music production team and was a catalyst for the school’s Art Club.
In addition, Joseph Kay made some remarkably favorable strides as an amateur boxer.
As for life after graduation, Joseph Kay will enroll at either Texas A&M or Lamar University, where he plans to major in engineering.
Joseph Kay’s mother earned a doctorate degree from Texas A&M. He strongly considered Prairie view A&M, also, Dr. Anglin Kay said.
Regardless of which college Joseph Kay chooses for the next four years, Dr. Anglin Kay emphasized she’s overwhelmingly proud of how her son had gone about executing a strategic, effective plan during the course of his high school tenure, one that has positioned him to graduate a year early, thus continuing what seems to be a family tradition, of sorts.
Joseph Kay’s sister, Raegan Key, previously graduated a year early and, according to his mother, “He aspired to do the same thing. They are both amazing students…a future nurse and a future engineer for our family, adding to the many other engineers and healthcare providers in the family. “We all stand behind them.”
Following the community-wide parade in the coming weeks, the countdown to Joseph Kay’s imminent departure will officially begin as he will start preparing to make the transition to college.
“We will miss him,” said Dr. Anglin said, “but he’s not that far, so we will visit him all the time.”
Thus, starting what figures to become yet a family tradition, of sorts.
