FedEx Corporation Executives partake in recent tour of UNICOR’s Operations in Forrest City, Arkansas

SEASON OF THE REBIRTH

**FRESH START —** In July 2019, Dr. Belay Reddick urged FedEx Corp. Executive Vice President and CFO Alan B. Graf, Jr. in a letter to visit the UNICOR inmates because they were more likely to find and keep meaningful employment, and hiring them can pay big dividends for his company.

FORREST CITY, Arkansas — If re-entry involvement could be attributed to personal rehabilitation, Dr. Belay Reddick could well be the banner bearer.

Dr. Reddick, 51, is an accomplished author and is a current incarcerated.

Interestingly, Reddick garnered praise for bringing FedEx Corporation executives to UNICOR, a vital correctional program within the Federal Bureau of Prisons, for a tour of its furniture factory and to speak with the offenders who participate in the UNICOR program about employability skills needed for the workforce in early February.

Attendees included Barb Wallander, Senior Vice President of Human Resources, Brandon Tolbert, Vice President of Human Resources, Rosemary Paden, Human Resources Advisor to Barb Wallander, Frank Olson, National Trainer, and Marlon Sanders, National Recruiter.

Dr. Reddick is the re-entry clerk for UNICOR in Forrest City, Arkansas, a company that customarily produces office furniture for the U.S. military. He is tasked with helping UNICOR inmates approaching release from custody get back on their feet. His goal is to ease the transition of inmates back into society, connecting them with jobs, housing and other resources.

“Learning, teamwork, putting customers first, and strong communication skills are all important in having a successful career,” Wallander recently told a crowd of roughly 130 inmates. “If you put the hard work in now, it’ll pay off later.”

Wallander added that FedEx Corp. will hire an ex-felon, provided the individual can pass a drug test and his date of conviction was at least 10 years ago.

In 2016, Dr. Reddick received media attention for hosting 12 senior advisors from the Obama administration at the Atlanta federal prison to hear a debate of three inmates with lengthy custodial sentences challenge a team of three Morehouse College undergraduates.

Tolbert offered tips as well, mentioning that he recently hired an ex-felon. Tolbert told the group of men that he believes in second chances.

“Always take 100 percent responsibility. Think like an owner. Play offense. Leave a legacy,” Tolbert said.

After giving motivating and inspiring highlights of their careers, the FedEx Corp. team conducted highly effective mock job interviews. Interestingly, the team provided critical feedback to the UNICOR inmates regarding their resumes content, eye contact, posture, communication skills, personal appearance, and overall job interview performance.

The team then viewed a 10-minute PowerPoint presentation about UNICOR Forrest City’s state-of-the-art equipment, and the various training inmates receive in the program.

A native of Jacksonville, Dr. Reddick is a licensed minister, author, publisher and motivational speaker. A Paxon Senior High graduate, Dr. Reddick attended Florida Community College at Jacksonville, Hillsborough Community College, as well as the Goshen Biblical Institute & Theological Seminary and NationsUniversity.

Three months later, FedEx Corp. contacted Operational Accountant Marilyn Phelix who retired last December about Dr. Reddick’s letter, and the opportunity to visit the inmates in 2020.

Dr. Reddick’s personal story is worthy of a Charles Dickens novel, according to sources with knowledge of his situation.

Prior to his conviction in 2005 for engaging in an illegal check passing scheme, Dr. Reddick was a homeless man, living in his car. He says that was an “idiotic thing to do.”

Consequently, he was sentenced to 20 years in prison, far from his family in Jacksonville, Florida.

He found himself in a gloomy place, surrounded by negativity and looking for a chance to help others who have taken wrong turns in life. It’s the kind of story prison staff members rarely see.

“I’m a proud, rehabilitated returning citizen,” Dr. Reddick said. “The things I’ve had to contend with have shaped me as a much better man and a much better person.”

“We have so many barriers in place,” says Dr. Reddick of finding employment post-incarceration. “If I can change that, then my living won’t be in vain.”

The men there, he added, will be able to take care of themselves and their families financially, helping to make communities safer.

During a phone interview with Making Headline News this week, Walker said Cultured Realty has compiled a team of 41 agents since its inception and that she’s hopeful such rapid growth continues.

A company that was founded on February 8, 2020, Walker — who was fixture for years for Keller Williams Realty — emphasized, among other things, that Cultured Realty is aiming to acquire 150 agents by the time the company reaches its six-month anniversary.

“It was a different situation, because with me coming from Keller Williams, I pretty much knew what I wanted to do,” Walker told MHN. (I told my business partner) we have all of what we need to start a company.”

Williams earned a Bachelor of Science in Biology from LeMoyne-Owen College in 2007, and then followed that up with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Baptist College of Health Science.

Consequently, she graduated from Walden University in 2016 with a Master of Science in Nursing, with an emphasis to become a Family Nurse Practitioner.

She’s currently pursuing an MBA at Walden University and is scheduled to earn it later this year.

“As a nurse, I’ve worked countless hours taking care of people,” Williams said. “I knew it was something so much more for me to do than to continue at the bedside. I was tired of the same thing every day.”

Something eventually had to give, Williams said.

“I was missing important things such as family events, activities with my kids, not spending enough time with my kids…basically I was burned out and knew I was underpaid,” Williams recalled. “I started doing my research on what can I could get into doing while utilizing my nursing degree.”

Fortunately for Williams, she ultimately came across a rather unique and effective strategy while weighing her career options.

“I ran across IV Hydration therapy and I was shocked that this could be done outside the hospital doors,” Williams said. “I found me a class to take and went from there. But even at that moment, I knew that wasn’t the only thing I wanted to do.”

That, to her credit, is why she still deemed it essential to keep her options open.

Retired Memphis Pastor Bishop Lee Ward recouping comfortably amid massive fire that destroyed his home

**THIS, TOO, SHALL PASS —** Just before midday Wednesday, Retired Pastor Bishop Lee Ward’s home in the Westwood district of Memphis was engulfed in flames and ultimately destroyed to rubble.

DALLAS — During an interview from Memphis late Thursday night, Valerie Brown was asked how would she foresee the morning worship service playing out Sunday at Greater Harvest Church of God In Christ.

Given her unequivocal response, it’s safe to assume a much-anticipated praise break for the ages will unfold sometime after 10 a.m. CST at 3509 Boxdale Street in Southeast Memphis.

“Sunday, the atmosphere will be absolute electric,” Brown told Making Headline News. “There will be an undeniable praise going forth as saints are praising God already. We never pray for a miracle and not give God praise for what He has done.”

To grasp a thorough concept of why periodic praise breaks are almost certain to take place within the walls of the church Brown’s grandfather, Bishop Lee Ward, had pastored for more than four decades, look no further than the dramatic turn of events that transpired earlier this week.

Just before midday Wednesday, Ward’s home in the Westwood district of Memphis was engulfed in flames and ultimately destroyed to rubble.

Ward, 97, his wife, Julia Scott Ward, 87, and the couple’s youngest grandchild, five-year-old Taylor Stevenson, were in the home at the time it went up in flames, but managed to survive the catastrophe of a residence Ward for years had deemed, “The Ward Estate.”

So ruinous was the fire that first responders had to dismantle the roof to rescue Ward, a military veteran who customarily uses a walker.

Interestingly, the Wards’ granddaughter was held out of school for two days and subsequently dialed 911, a heroic, unprecedented development that essentially sent their family, close friends, and a host of well-wishers into a massive frenzy — on and off of social media.

Ward, who was hospitalized for smoke inhalation, was released Thursday afternoon and is expected to make a full recovery, according to sources with knowledge of the situation.

“On my way to the house (Wednesday), we were all waiting on the responders to get him out of the house,” Brown, an Instructional Facilitator at Hickory Ridge Middle School, said after fielding a call from her uncle, Greater Harvest Senior Superintendent Renardo Ward.

“I called my father, who was on the scene behind the barriers. I asked had they gotten granddaddy out. He said, ‘Yes, I see them bringing him out on a stretcher.’ I asked was he okay. My father, who will shield me from as much heartbreak as possible, told me, ‘I just can’t see him being okay with everything we see right now. It looks really bad. I cannot say it is going to be good and I’m not sure if anybody would be strong enough to make it out of this.’”

At that point, Brown had done that about which she was taught dating back to her childhood days growing up in the church. She erected a figurative war room, of sorts, during what undoubtedly was an emotionally-driven, tear-jerking commute from Southeast Memphis to Westwood.

“I screamed, hung up the phone, and told God He had spared my grandfather too many times and from too many things to let him perish in a house fire,” said Brown, praying as if her grandfather’s life depended on it.

In actuality, it did.

“I just didn’t believe the God I served would let him go out like that,” Brown said. “I prayed and rushed to the house.”

In November 2014, Ward was consecrated to the office of Bishopric during COGIC’s 107th Holy Convocation in St. Louis, months after turning over the pastoral reigns to his son, Superintendent Renardo Ward.

By the time Brown had arrived at what was left of her grandparents’ residence, there was nothing, really, to figure out because, well, God had already worked it out.

Another setback, another miraculous comeback victory for Ward, a longtime COGIC preacher and former U. S. Marine veteran, who fought in World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam Conflict during his 26-year stint in the military.

Named Senior Pastor in 1972 of what was then South Fort Pickering Church of God in Christ, the church was eventually renamed Greater Harvest COGIC approximately three years later.

“I ran up the street and praised and worshipped God then and there. I creamed. I cried. I hollered. I recall standing with my arms lifted and rain drops hitting my face and screaming with tears, but God, I thank You.”

All things considered, now we know why in, all likelihood, a raucous praise break figures to unfold at the corner of Boxdale Street and Winchester Road Sunday morning.

A rental properties endeavor that spans 25 years, Covington has become a fixture while functioning in his element. He currently owns 45 properties in his native establishment of Milwaukee, as well as 15 properties in Memphis, and seven properties in South Florida.

He has announced the startup of an online course he will be conducting in June 2020, classes that will educate aspire real estate professionals on how to generate income in real estate.

Generally, Covington’s sustained success has emerged amid having garnered partnerships and contracts with local state, and federal agencies, he said.

“I’ve have expanded my reach to ensure I’m making a difference in the communities I serve,” he said. “We are all here to make a difference in the world. We all have that power. The question is, ‘What are you doing with your power?’”

All things considered, he would know.
