**GOD’S RED ZONE —** Former Texas Christian University football player Charles Jones is savoring his rightful and well-deserved place as the Founder and Senior Pastor of New Creation Fellowship Church, the awe-inspiring ministry he organized in February 2011 amid deep concern for his family, friends, and the community.

FORT WORTH, Texas — There’s nothing like a praying mother.

If anyone can greatly attest to this notion, it’s Charles Jones.

Consider, for instance, how during his youth, Jones recalls vividly the days during which his mother had steadfastly gone to great lengths to ensure her family’s single-parent household was covered, both in the natural and the spirit.

“I learned how to be strong watching my mom battle through some difficult seasons in life,” Jones told Making Headline News during a recent interview. “There were many times as a single mother she made sacrifices to ensure we were covered. She went without to make sure we had.”

She pushed my dreams of being an athlete, while praying that the streets, gangs and drugs wouldn’t swallow me up.”

Interestingly, as Jones explained, even when recurring injuries reduced his effectiveness to play for a high-profile Division 1 football program — thus “halted my aspirations as an athlete,” he acknowledged — there was that one person besides God who had — for a lack of better words — proven to his ride or die soulmate.

That one person: Elect Lady Jennifer Jones (or “Lady J”), Jones’ beloved companion to whom he’s been married for 19-plus years. The couple share five daughters (Katelyn, Kylah, KaLeah, Kendall and Charlize), each of whom like their parents, are actively involved in ministry.

“I started preaching in the latter part of 2000, and he was called to ministry shortly after, if I’m not mistaking,” said Jones, whose first sermon was given at church of his wife’s father, Superintendent Ray Lee Smith the Greater Rose Hill Church in Terrell, Texas.

“It’s crazy,” Jones said, explaining the constant pursuit of his wife back during his undergraduate days. “I chased her for two years on campus and she wouldn’t give me the time of day, but in my moment of isolation and when I was battling suicidal ideations, God used her to minister to my brokenness.”

And just like that, not only did Jones witnessed what apparently was a spiritual makeover, of sorts, but God had ultimately blessed him to find his good thing in the process — all because, well, this young preacher had demonstrated enough meekness to embrace a process he appropriately likens to the Biblical character Jonah.

“She took me to church and I saw God clearly,” Jones said of his first real encounter with his wife. “Everything I had gone through had been my belly of the fish experience. All my life, God had been navigating and ordaining things to spit me out on the banks of my destiny.”

IN THE PRESENCE OF ROYALTY

The Joneses share five daughters (Katelyn, Kylah, KaLeah, Kendall and Charlize), each of whom like their parents, are actively involved in ministry.

It wasn’t long thereafter that Jones had officially hung up his helmet and cleats and subsequently commenced to calling audibles for God.

“I accepted my call a few months after that,” Jones explained. “This is the PG (parental guidance) version of my testimony.”

Regardless of how Jones labels his testimony, what matters, really, at this stage in his life is that such an intriguing and tear-jerking memory is what essentially had spearheaded his quest to press and navigate toward a destiny that was accompanied by his heaven-mandated assignment — the birthing of his ministry.

“New Creation Fellowship Church is a vision inspired by God,” Jones said. “In essence, (it is) a Macedonian call that was necessary on my way to heaven…one that was birthed with the purpose of strengthening the nucleus of family, community and the total man, first naturally then spiritually.”

“My wife and children have been awesome supporters of the ministry. It can be a burden at times because they have to share me with so many people, but we’ve learned to balance well over the years. For Jones, God has surely blessed his family and exalted his ministry for such a pivotal time as now.

Eight years and counting to be exact.

“My servitude transcended the pulpit and Sunday morning services,” Jones said. “God told me to make His life easy, hold Him up and do whatever was necessary in order for Him to facilitate vision.”

Widely known amongst her peers as “The Business Whisperer,” Jeffries has developed a keen passion for helping business owners repair their personal credit — this after she spent a considerable amount of time as a paralegal some nine years ago.

Then, three months after having starting college, Jeffries expanded her business-related repertoire when she assumed a position for a business and bankruptcy attorney.

“We got a case from a young black boutique owner who was being sued by a large leasing company for being unable to pay her rent,” Jeffries explained. “She went five months without paying rent, because it was too expensive for her business’ budget. The leasing agency wanted payment in full. She couldn’t produce it, so they sued her.”

Jeffries, in fact, had essentially become affected by the client’s unfortunate situation.

“She walked into the office, crying with no money for an attorney,” Jeffries said. “So the attorney took the case Pro Bono (for free). The attorney reviewed the lease looking for loopholes and told the client she owed the money, because there were no loop holes. So we filed for bankruptcy.

SEASON OF THE REBIRTH

“Since I knew about business credit and how its built on the EIN and not the owner’s social security number, I started separating business owners from their companies, not only to have the limited liability protection, but also to be able to obtain more borrowing power, to have that competitive edge to obtain those large corporate and government contracts, and just be all around credible,” said Jeffries, the author of the newly-produced book entitled, “Diary of Your Favorite Animals Near Extinction: Volume 1.

“The client wanted her merchandise out of the store,” Jeffries continued. “The leasing company wouldn’t release it. The attorney had to file a motion for the company to release the merchandise. They fought the motion, but our client won; however, the leasing agency’s representatives were angry. They called the client in the middle of the night and told her to pick up her stuff.

“The client arrived to the locked store with her merchandise sitting outside in black garbage bags…about $25,000 in merchandise. Not only that, they had poured oil on her merchandise. What they didn’t pour oil on, they broke. The attorney sued the leasing agency, but because it is a multi-billion dollar company, they fought against that lawsuit until the client finally just gave up and disappeared.”

It was, in fact, because of that downtrodden situation that Jeffries had become even more inspired to make a difference in her selected industry.

“Seeing this case made me want to help people repair their credit,” Jeffries said. “So I started a consumer credit repair firm after receiving the education to repair credit.”

Fortunately for Jeffries, a host of business owners began soliciting her services to have personal credit restored for their respective businesses.

**MAKING STRIDES —** Jeffries eventually earned her GED in 1998. Approximately 12 years later, she her garnered an undergraduate degree in Legal Studies, and in 2011, she would become fully certified as a credit consultant. Not to be outdone, Jeffries received certification from UCLA for Global Entrepreneurship in 2016 and earned certification in grant writing the following year.

Texas mother Aleesha Simmons remembering her son’s legacy through a notable non-profit organization

**REMEMBERING DOUG —** According to sources with knowledge of the situation, Doug Williams — who lettered in football, basketball, and track and field for Dallas’ Franklin D. Roosevelt High School — was conditioning in April at a nearby park when he suddenly passed out. To no avail, first responders could not resuscitate him. Williams’ mother, Aleesha Simmons, has since established *“Doug’s Run To The Finish,”* her rising nonprofit organization that is presently in the works and is scheduled to officially go into operations within “four-to-six weeks,” she said.

DUNCANVILLE, Texas — For Aleesha Simmons, it is a dejected, demoralizing feeling she’s repeated said she doesn’t want another mother to have to convey.

The discomfort to which she is alluding is the shocking death of her son, Doug Williams, a then-multi-sport athlete at Dallas’ Franklin D. Roosevelt High School, whose life was cut short back in April amid a sudden cardiac arrest.

He was 16.

According to a report at https://www.your-heart-health.com/content/close-the-gap/en-US/heart-disease-facts/young-athletes.html, sudden cardiac arrest (or SCA) is the leading cause of death in young athletes. Most often, the death occurs during athletic training or competition.

If SCA is not treated immediately, it can lead to sudden cardiac death (or SCD) within minutes, the report said.

At the time of his death, Williams reportedly was hours removed from having rededicated his life to Christ.

“After my 16-year-old son passed away suddenly in April due to the sudden cardiac arrest, it left me so lost and confused,” Simmons told Making Headline News this week. “And I feel like I didn’t want any other mother to have to go through this, especially not even knowing that something was even wrong.”

While Simmons and her family undoubtedly will be affected by the sudden demise of her son for the rest of their lives, she has — to her credit — deemed it essential to carry on Williams’ legacy through a notable cause.

As Simmons explained, while a majority of the Roosevelt High School community is still very affected by her son’s death, a number of fellow church members and close acquaintances are backing her mightily on bringing about awareness through her fledgling organization.

A native of Chicago who works primarily as a Dallas/Fort Worth-area customer service specialist, Simmons is the founder and director of “Doug’s Run To The Finish,” her rising nonprofit organization that is presently in the works and is scheduled to officially go into operations within “four-to-six weeks,” she said.

Through “Doug’s Run To The Finish,” Simmon’s strategic mission is centered largely on stopping the vastly growing epidemic of sudden cardiac arrest, particularly amongst youth athletes, she told MHN.

In order for this to happen, parents, student athletes, and trainers must become knowledgeable about the various symptoms related to cardiac arrest so that her organization, in turn, can appropriately assist in setting up the necessary screenings, etc.

**GOD’S PLAN…GOD’S PLAN —** At the time of his death, Williams reportedly was hours removed from having rededicated his life to Christ.

Interestingly, “Doug’s Run To The Finish” will host community-wide events during which it will provide credible resources and pertinent information, as well CPR training, which would involve educating certified individuals on how to properly use a defibrillator, Simmons said.

In addition, Simmons emphasized she will execute the essential steps to ensure that area sports teams are equipped with defibrillators to prevent sudden cardiac arrest in the event a student athlete collapses.

As Simmons explained, while a majority of the Roosevelt High School community is still very much affected by her son’s death, a number of fellow church members and close acquaintances are backing her mightily on bringing about awareness through her fledgling organization.

“(I thank) my pastor (Andrew Jackson Jr.), my family and close friends who are deeply affected by my son’s sudden passing,” Simmons said. “This mission is very near and dear to my heart, because the day I lost my son was by far the worst day that I’ve ever experienced in my life.”

For what it’s worth, Simmons has often struggled, particularly with regards to seeing a silver-lining, of sorts, in the wake of Williams’ untimely death.

“Someone told me that my son was a seed and his passing was just the seed being planted and this mission is the fruits of that seed sprouting up and manifesting,” Simmons explained. “So my son lives on through saving the lives of others.”

While Simmons and her family undoubtedly will be affected by the sudden demise of her son for the rest of their lives, she has — to her credit — deemed it essential to carry on Williams’ legacy through a notable cause.

A nonprofit organization that’s geared toward individuals ranging mostly between the ages five-to-25, Simmons said amongst the factors about which she has become thoroughly persuaded is that her son undoubtedly fulfilled the purpose for which God created him.

Now it’s time to effectively carry out his legacy through a notable organization that figures to not just change a generation, but to impact it in the process.

After all, Simmons is fully convinced that is what her young, vibrant, speedy multi-sport athlete of a son would have wanted.

“When I was told that I had 90 days to live, I trusted God, because at my initial diagnosis in 2013, He told me, ‘This sickness is not unto death,’” Starks said. “It took four years for the terminal diagnosis to be given, but it isn’t like I hadn’t prepared for it. In the middle of all of this, I was also cured of stage four thyroid cancer.”

As for her initial book, Starks said: “I became convicted that if I truly am called by the Name of Christ, that I would have to show love and compassion to (Guyger). Ironically, a year later, that story is now international news. But it is what prompted me to check myself and share a message of healing and emotional well-being with the world. What our minds believe, our bodies will manifest.”

Having learned of her cancer diagnosis six years ago, Starks latest book comes approximately 16 years after her initial project: “When Water Was Free” (which took somewhere in the neighborhood of about six months to complete).

As Starks told MHN this week, what is known as the “companion journal” for her latest books is nearly complete.

“This will complement the book and allow the reader to actively journal his or her thoughts about the virtues and vignettes shared in the book,” said Starks, adding that there’s also an e-book version of her latest written work, with the newest additions scheduled to hit the market sometime in November.

The feedback for Starks’ books has been mostly favorable.

“I totally love how Patrice makes you aware of life’s challenges,” said LaFreda Williams, one of Starks’ most dedicated readers. However, holding onto your faith is the key. She is an advocate for self-care and I believe this book will provide hope.”

Throughout the book, I encourage readers to arm themselves with virtue stones so that when a giant appears, they are able to handle him with Davidic assurance.”

Talk about making good use of the time with which God has blessed her on this side of heaven.

IN HER OWN WORDS

While each of my works carry life lessons, none of my work is from a “woe is me,” place. I write in first person and tell the story, to engage the reader, and in most cases, make them laugh. For instance, hospital gowns are for sick people. I refused to wear them. No sir. My sister-friends threw a pajama party for me, and I was able to wear fun and cute pajamas for each day of the five weeks’ stay at Medical City-Dallas.

Next…no crying in my room; only if we have laughed ourselves to tears. I wasn’t dying, and there was no need to go ordering a 100-piece chicken box from Walmart for my homegoing. Nope. Not necessary.

Even after the doctor told me I had ninety days to live, I didn’t worry about dying, because my salvation is secure; I worried about losing my hair and if I’d still be this cute and sassy with a bald head. The answer to that question is a confident, “YES!”

‘LOOK AT ME NOW…HEYYYYY’ — A native of Shreveport, Louisiana, Dee “lilD” Porter is the mastermind behind the book entitled, “Route 2: My Choice To Struggle To Succeed,” which is a nearly a month removed from its ceremonious release.

DUNCANVILLE, Texas — Dee Porter wasted little time Tuesday morning taking to the airwaves, where she informed her hundreds of thousands of listeners of an awe-inspiring development that, years ago, seemed virtually improbable.

But God…

“I always said that what I went through would make a dope movie, and when one of my friends wrote a book, she really encouraged me to do the same,” Porter, during a recent exclusive interview with Making Headline News, explained, recalling the turbulent, tear-jerking, seemingly insurmountable events that led to her composing her first book. “I toyed with the idea in 2017, and finally got serious in 2018.”

A book signing for Porter’s book is scheduled for October 10 from 7-9 p.m. at Pan-African Connection Bookstore Art Gallery and Resource Center in Dallas, located at 4466 South Marsalis Avenue.

Still clinging to massive dreams of ultimately landing a huge break in this ever-so-competitive radio industry, Porter essentially was faced with two options: return to her native establishment of Shreveport and hit the figurative reset button. Or strategically devise ways to conquer homelessness.

As far as she was concerned, the latter undoubtedly was her only recourse.

That’s because instead of returning to Louisiana, Porter sensed it would be in her interest to stay in Ohio and chase her dreams. Even it meant staking out in a motel or often using the back seat of vehicle as a sofa and mattress.

To her credit, that’s just what she did.

“I know my purpose is to help others realize their worth earlier in life than I did, and this book is part of my purpose by showing people that there’s beauty in the struggle,” said Porter, adding that at least two more books are on the horizon (“I don’t give away the titles, but they’re both autobiographical,” she acknowledged).

“You will make it through. The universe makes a way for those who align their thoughts and actions to their goal. I’m proof of that.”
