“The function of education is to teach one to think intensively and to think critically. Intelligence plus character…that is the goal of true education.” — Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
AWE-INSPIRING JOURNEY
According to God’s manual, “Judah” carries on a rather distinctly unique meaning.
No one, it seems, has wholeheartedly embraced this notion more than Shawonia Thomas.
“His name in Latin means, soldier. Judah was a derived from the Tribe of Judah, Jacob lineage the law givers,” Thomas explains.
The person to whom Thomas is alluding is Myles Judah Thomas-White, her beloved son who will achieve arguably his grandest milestone to date when he acquires his diploma during Atlanta’s Benjamin E. Mays High School commencement exercises May 3 at 3 p.m. EST at Georgia Tech University.
For Thomas-White, a student athlete who was a member of Benjamin E. Mays’ varsity football and track and field squads, his journey to excelling on and off the gridiron is one his mother figures to embrace for years to come.
Amid Making Headline News’ Annual Salute To Graduate Tributes For 2024, Thomas emphasized, among other things, how “super proud and elated” she is regarding the immeasurable strides her son has made ever since he made the transition to high school.
“He has broken records and curses,” Thomas said Thomas-White. “His mantra is limitless and unstoppable.”
STAYED IN FAITH
Amongst the reasons is that Thomas-White was nothing short of impressive in the classroom, where he manufactured a cumulative grade point average of 3.6.
Next up for Thomas-White: it’s off this fall to Louisiana State University, where he plans to major in Mechanical Engineering while minoring in Finance and Sports Management.

Also, Thomas-White has plans to pursue his CPA license and enroll in graduate school after finishing his undergraduate studies.
Besides LSU, Thomas-White considered a slew of colleges, most notably Georgia, Clemson University, Michigan State University, Mercer University, Georgia State University, Vanderbilt University, University of North Carolina, Howard University, Hampton University, Auburn University, Clayton State University, Southern University, University of Colorado, and Ohio State University, among others.
Interestingly enough, amongst the things Thomas deems most gratifying is how her son weathered the storm amid an unprecedented global pandemic, coupled with his tough decision to hang up his football cleats during his senior year.
Thomas-White said the possibility exists that he will consider playing football at LSU as a walk-on.
During his high school tenure, Thomas-White was a member of the FBLA (Future Business Leaders of America), One Goal (College Success), and the National Beta Club. He also spoke for Atlanta News First and 11 Alive.
“He preserved through family domestic static, COVID trying times, and watching mama fight with and for him with flying colors,” Thomas said of Thomas-White. “I’m going to miss him a little because I will be over there in Louisiana with him a lot. I’m happy to see him grow and flourish, forging a way for us.”
In the meantime, Thomas has set her sights on Graduation Day, a moment she acknowledges she will cherish for a lifetime.
“When I hear his name, me and the family are going to belt out his name so loud,” Thomas said when ask what will go through her mind when her son’s name is uttered through the loudspeakers. “My voice will leave for a few days.”
For all the right reasons, too.
