She considers a field before she buys or accepts it — expanding her business prudently — with her profits, she plants fruitful vines in her vineyard. (Proverbs 31:16 Amplified Bible)
GRITS UNIVERSITY
ARLINGTON, Texas — Grits anyone?
Like many newcomers to ever-evolving world of entrepreneurship, Sharon Coulberson had become greatly inspired to use her creativity as an aspiring businesswoman during the dreaded — and precedented — global pandemic that was the coronavirus outbreak.
Much to her delight, she’s been nothing short of remarkable.
That’s because last week, Coulberson commemorated the second anniversary as the architect of Grits With A Twist, her Arlington, Texas-based featured business endeavor that is starting to become a fixture throughout the Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex.

A native of Monroe, Louisiana, Coulberson doesn’t shy away from the notion that she’s happy she diligently stepped out on faith by establishing a business venture that has made immeasurable strides since its inception in February 2021.
“Honestly, there wasn’t a competitive drive initially,” Coulberson, 42, told Making Headline News during a recent interview. “The pandemic thrust me into starting my own business. The feedback from customers and the encouragement of close family and friends is what propelled me to take the leap.”

To her credit, Coulberson — a gifted chef in her own right — sensed it was an ideal concept to devise ways to expand her distinctly unique craft during the dreaded shelter-in-place.
“Being isolated and forced to be still during COVID pushed me to begin to create, as cooking was my coping mechanism during the pandemic,” Coulberson said. “I’ve always had a love for cooking, but I knew I wanted my business to be somewhat different. I didn’t want to just sell plates of food. I wanted it to be somewhat different. With learning as much as I can about all different types of grits became somewhat of an obsession. I wanted to master and concentrate on one type of something and make it better and better, all while being as creative as I know how.”
Surely, Coulberson has gone to great lengths to expand her scrumptious grits repertoire.
That’s because this beloved Texas chef extraordinaire has come with an assortment of delectable grits entrées, each of which comes with — you’ve guess it — a unique twist.
“Creating can be limitless and I absolutely love that part,” Coulberson told MHN. “Additionally, I like naming the different types of grits I serve. I especially enjoyed naming the Soul Bowl. It’s named in honor of my dad, the late Darrel Dean Coulberson. He loved all kinds of beans, so red beans and sausage smothered grits were perfect to pair.”
GET IN WHERE YA GRIT IN
Interestingly enough, Coulberson credits her mother, the late Mona Ann Coulberson, for helping her discover her keen passion for cooking, a trend she has turned into a full-fledge business that, much to her delight, is as good as advertised.
Two years and counting.
Now, Coulberson said, she’s on a fervent quest to ensure that Grits With A Twist becomes a national fixture — much sooner rather than later.
“Well, that’s the thing,” Coulberson, a graduate of the University of North Texas who acquired a Master’s in Sociology from UT-Arlington, said. “My hope is that it will, in fact, take me across nations and put me in rooms I have only imagined being in. My belief is that the right timing and people will help Grits With A Twist become a household name, in grocery stores nationwide, and will become and major restaurant chain sought by many.
OM-GOOD GRITS
“My business caters to all ages of individuals that simply enjoy grits,” Coulberson continued. “I would like to think my customers who are true foodies and enthusiasts of food exploration that’s somewhat different and still pleasing to their palates.”
Given the sustained success of her featured business endeavor, Coulberson, an advocate for mental health — ” Mental health is my first love” she acknowledged — said plans are in the works spearhead a number of community-wide events, during which she will show appreciation to the valiant supporters who have backed her since the ceremonious startup of Grits With A Twist.
“My goal is to host a small two-year Grits and Growth Customer Appreciation Anniversary that will be open to the public,” Coulberson said. “Another event I plan to execute is Grits In the Park that will be promoting my G.R.I.T.S. Fundraiser: Guts-Resilience-Initiative-Tenacity-Self-Motivation are important for young people to embody when accomplishing their goals and I want to make sure they know it. In the future, my hope is to give away a scholarship to an inspiring young person who loves to cook.
DESTINY STEPS
“It’s imperative (to esteem others daily) because inspiration lives within me,” Coulberson continued. “Motivating and encouraging others is the epitome of who I am, along with making others smile and laugh until their stomach hurts. G.R.I.T.S. can mean whatever is near and dear to as a person.
“I want people to know that they are their biggest fan. G.R.I.T.S. are Guts to try something different, Resilience to keep pushing and believing in yourself even when no one else does, Initiative to take the first step towards the unknown as it can be initially scary, Tenacity to try and be steadfast in your journey even when things look grim and having Self-motivation to become sufficient and learning all there is to learn about matters of the heart that are important to you.”
Talk about devising ways to expand her distinctly unique craft during the dreaded shelter-in-place.
