BISHOP T.D. JAKES’ INTERNATIONAL LEADERSHIP SUMMIT PREVIEW COVERAGE: Houston domestic violence survivor LaKis Sims’ withstands potentially fatal encounter, shares her ‘truths’ in newly-released book

Andre Johnson May 3, 2023

Yet what we suffer now is nothing compared to the glory He will reveal to us later. (Romans 8:18 NLT)

SHE’S STILL STANDING

GOD KEPT HER — LaKis Sims, a rising Texas motivational speaker and domestic violence advocate, chronicled arguably the darkest season of her life in Knowing When To Let Go, her highly-anticipated first book that made its official release in October 2022.

DALLAS — In case you don’t know her, LaKis Sims would like to introduce herself.

“I’m an educator, author, domestic violence survivor, a notary, a tax consultant, and mother of three,” Sims told Making Headline News this week.

Regardless, the “most important one,” she emphasized, “I am a child of God.”

Indeed, she is, a devout woman of faith whom, in recent years, has been destined to press and navigate her way through what could be appropriately described as a dreaded season in the wilderness.

DISCLOSING HER TRUTHS — As part of MHN’s advance coverage of Bishop T. D. Jakes’ International Leadership Summit May 4-6 in Orlando, Sims, now a Houston-area single mother, recalled how a gruesome domestic violence situation three years ago with her then-husband, by all accounts, landed her in the hospital, fighting for her life.

JOB WELL DONE — “I have gotten great feedback (since the release of Knowing When To Let Go),” Sims said. “Many people have told me that this book has opened up their eyes and they cried the entire time because they felt themselves in the book.”

As Sims recalls, such turbulence essentially began to unfold during the infancy stages of the unprecedented global pandemic.

As part of MHN’s advance coverage of Bishop T. D. Jakes’ International Leadership Summit May 4-6 in Orlando, Sims, now a Houston-area single mother, recalled how a gruesome domestic violence occurrence three years ago with her then-husband, by all accounts, landed her in the hospital, fighting for her life.

JOIN THE FIGHT

“I was never seen by an investigator or anything,” Sims, during an exclusive interview with MHN, said, explaining the sequence of events that caused her to be hospitalized for two full weeks with no visitors. “I was shot with a 40 Glock, two inches from my heart. I was left with the bullet in my back, which it broke a bone in my spine, and I was told it couldn’t be removed. I had a collapsed lung and four broken ribs. Immediately arriving to the hospital, I had a chest tube placed in me to help me breath.”

All things considered, Sims, a rising motivational speaker and domestic violence advocate, chronicled arguably the darkest season of her life in Knowing When To Let Go, her highly-anticipated first book that made its official release in October 2022.

A 218-page written work she began composing in December 2021, Sims said she had become greatly inspired to produce Knowing When To Let Go in large part because she’s convinced there are other women — “as well as men” — who are struggling to let go of a relationship that they know is toxic.

Generally, Sims’ Knowing When To Let Go vividly reminds the masses that love requires efforts and sacrifices, but also mindfulness and sanity, according to a detailed synopsis of this author’s book at Amazon.com.

WE’RE BETTER TOGETHER

STAY TUNED — Approximately seven months removed since the release of Knowing When To Let Go, Sims announced she is scheduled to take part in a five-city book tour that will begin in Tyler, Texas July 8 and will culminate in her native establishment of Houston.

“Knowing when to let something go is critical to maintaining harmony within,” said an Amazon spokesperson for Sims’ Knowing When To Let Go. “This book is a love story — not your conventional fairytale — of a fearless, yet kind-hearted lady, Rachel, who finds herself struggling with a problematic life that many women fall victim to. The story revolves around her and Robert’s struggle when his parents refuse to accept Rachel as his wife. Moreover, the story provides an emotional insight into motherhood and the sacrifices a mother has to make for her kids.

“They say, ‘To love is to let go.’ This autobiography will explore the layered depths of the emotional turmoil beneath the surface of romanticized love. It is an emotional roller coaster that will take its reader from the highs of passionate love sentiments to the crests of sorrow, betrayal, and disappointment. It will inspire and encourage women to take a stand for themselves and will empower them with the right mindset to learn to let go. This book will serve as a guide to every woman who has suffered at the hands of love.”

COUNTING HER BLESSINGS — Sims said amongst the things about which she deems a blessing is the fact that God has strategically spared her life to tell disclose her truths through her new book.

A book she grasped the vision to write in July 2020, Sims recalls how while on the way to the hospital, she was “coded,” meaning a team of providers — sometimes called a code team — would rush to the specific location and begin immediate resuscitative efforts.

“I explained to the paramedics that I was tired,” Sims told MHN. “Once I was brought back, his question was, ‘What is it that you have to live for?’ I responded by saying, ‘My three children.’ He then said, ‘With every breath you breath, ask God to keep you here for your three children.’

“The day after getting out of the hospital, I was driven to the police station to give my statement,” Sims continued. “I was told no one came to get my statement because I had COVID, which was not true. I gave my statement to the detective, and he said my ex-husband’s statement was very different. So I decided to tell my story through my book. I want my truth to be told.”

Since making her authorship debut, Sims has become the beneficiary of a rash of rave of reviews for dauntlessly sharing her life-altering story, one she senses could help other domestic violence victims and survivors for years to come.

Sims’ Knowing When To Let Go is available via Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and where books are sold.

“My divine message that I am trying to send through this book is to know when to let go before it’s too late,” Sims said. “The story of Rachael in my book almost had a tragic ending but, by the grace of God, she survived. This book is helping me reach my purpose God has created for me because I am being an inspiration to women of all ages and even men. Growing up in church, I was always told by a missionary that God was going to use me to help other women.”

Approximately seven months removed since the release of Knowing When To Let Go, Sims announced she is scheduled to take part in a five-city book tour that will begin in Tyler, Texas July 8 and will culminate in her native establishment of Houston.

Other tour sites include Orlando, Fredericksburg, Virginia, and New Orleans.

Her sophomore book, she said, is currently in the works.

STAY IN FAITH

“I am in the process of writing a sequel (entitled, Life After letting Go), but I’m trying to let a little more life pass by,” Sims said.

In the meantime, Sims said amongst the things about which she deems a blessing is the fact that God has strategically spared her life to disclose her truths through her new book.

Most importantly, she doesn’t shy away from the notion that she’s overwhelmingly blessed to carry on the blessedness of motherhood with her faithful three.

GOD’S PURPOSE PUSHER

STICKING WITH GOD — To her credit, Sims is a devout woman of faith whom, in recent years, has been destined to press and navigate her way through what could be appropriately described as a dreaded season in the wilderness.

“I have gotten great feedback (since the release of Knowing When To Let Go),” Sims said. “Many people have told me that this book has opened up their eyes and they cried the entire time because they felt themselves in the book.”
