Behold, how good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity! It is like the precious ointment upon the head, that ran down upon the beard, even Aaron’s beard that went down to the skirts of his garments. As the dew of Hermon, and as the dew that descended upon the mountains of Zion: for there the Lord commanded the blessing, even life for evermore. (Psalm 133:1-3 KJV)
MEN MATTER, TOO
As Maya Tyler vividly recalls, she had been fielding one side of the story for the longest.
That, as a result, only fueled her desire to gather more answers.
“Before becoming widowed, I’d really only hear stories from the widowed man’s perspective when I asked one about it,” Tyler, during a recent interview with Making Headline News as part of its 2023 Essence Music Festival national coverage amid “the party with a purpose” event June 29-July 3 in New Orleans, said, recalling the memorable developments surrounding her latest authorship project.
“I realized there were a lot of opinions about widowers I had based on Lifetime movies,” Tyler jokingly said. “Where the widower was either A: nothing more than a ‘perfect answer’ for a brokenhearted woman, B: a bitter old man who compared everything to his saintly late wife, or C: remarried and therefore (he insist he’s) ‘fine.’

“That’s a very narrow lens, but you’d be surprised at how much of society sees them that way too. The more I spoke with widows, the more I realized there is so much more to their stories, and they need way more representation and support than they are getting. I wanted to write about it, God gave me the title, I gathered my team, and went to work.”
It wasn’t long thereafter — “my anthology projects take about four months, start to finish,” Tyler said — that this Washington, DC-based empowerment personality’s third anthology to date had become a ceremonious reality.

The title: Widowhood Is For Women: MEN JUST REMARRY: And Other Wild Misconceptions of The Widower Experience.
An intriguing collaborative published masterpiece that is comprised of 93 pages, Tyler’s Widowhood Is For Women: MEN JUST REMARRY: And Other Wild Misconceptions of The Widower Experience appropriately enlightens her readers that it’s becoming more and more common to hear women advocate for widow support and speak about the pain of widowhood, losing the father of her children, navigating womanhood after hurdling the social obstacles that come with the territory, according to an in-depth breakdown of this author’s anthology via Amazon.com.
But what about the men?
“What toxic stereotypes about grief and manhood, solo fatherhood, or rumors around re-marriage are they battling, and how are they managing in their own mental health journeys? What support and advocacy needs do they have that may be different from those of widowed women, and how can we do better, especially in areas society overlooks? Four widowed, extraordinary men answer those questions candidly, honestly, and in some ways, surprisingly,” said an Amazon spokesperson for Tyler’s Widowhood Is For Women: MEN JUST REMARRY: And Other Wild Misconceptions of The Widower Experience.
In addition, Tyler’s latest collab book is accompanied by what is known as a Bonus Chapter in which 50 anonymous widowers were asked to “sound off, exposing the myths, uncovering their truths, and encouraging us all to extend grace and hold space for our widower community,” an Amazon spokesperson said.
SHE’S THINKIN’ OUTSIDE THE BOX
“Back again for a third window-into-widowhood anthology, four-time best-selling author Maya W. Tyler presents her first ‘manthology’ as a counterpart to her ground-breaking women’s series, And Then She Bounced Back. “This book aims to uncover the often misunderstood, under-represented male experience of widowhood while encouraging widowers everywhere to stand in their truths and seek the support they deserve.”
Tyler’s And Then She Bounced Back!: Standing On Broken Pieces, an Amazon No. 1 Bestseller, made its ceremonious debut back on January, a book that was released less than four months after the ceremonious debut of And Then She Bounced Back…Again And Again, her first anthology that made its official release August 2022.
Like those two collaborative published documents, Tyler’s latest anthology, she acknowledged, is an ideal way to better shed light on the constant stereotypes surrounding widowers.
“We are put on this earth together and we are all connected to someone else in some way,” Tyler, who will serve as a panelist for the H.E.R. Vision organization’s Girl Live! Experience in Maryland July 8 and the WAR-RING Widows Conference in Richmond, Virginia October 7, told MHN.
“Why do the hard things alone? Why not help and support each other? God has given me a talent. I’m told repeatedly to pull out what is in people’s heads and put it into the language of their hearts. I’m blessed to wake up every morning and know why I’m here — and to be able do it every day.’
SETTING THE RECORD STRAIGHT
As for whether other books pertaining to widows and widowers are forthcoming, Tyler said that, by all accounts, is a foregone conclusion.
“Of course. The Window Into Widowhood books I’m writing are far from done,” she said. “Stay tuned.”
Indeed, we will.
