Our greatness has always come from people who expect nothing and take nothing for granted, folks who work hard for what they have, then reach back and help others after them. — Michelle Obama, Former First Lady, United States of America
THE 2024 HONOREES
HOUSTON — Four academically-gifted young ladies this weekend will be honored for their dedicatory service in the classroom and community.
The Houston-based Paint The Town Purple In Honor Of Jimmie will host the 2024 Debutante Ball, a notable empowerment event designed to continue the fight against cancer, as well as bring awareness for those who have been affected.
Powered by Paint The Town Purple In Honor Of Jimmie, the Debutante Ball will take place on January 5 at 6 p.m. CST at Houston’s Bethany Baptist, located at 7304 Homestead Road.
Tickets to the event can be purchased at https://www.ticketleap.events/tickets/paint-the-town-purple-in-honor-of-jimmie/paint-the-town-purple-debutante-ball.
According to Paint The Town Purple In Honor Of Jimmie founder Dr. Raechelle Kay, organizers for her event are expecting approximately 60 individuals to turn out for this year’s Debutante Ball.
“(What stands out to me the most as we prepare for this event is) the community service that the ladies took part in,” Dr. Kay told Making Headline News this week.
Founded by Dr. Kay, Paint The Town Purple In Honor Of Jimmie is a credible nonprofit organization established to pay homage to Jimmie Anglin, as well as her mother and father who all died from pancreatic cancer.
According to Debutante spokesperson and Paint The Town Purple In Honor Of Jimmie founder Dr. Kay, this is a debutante cotillion, during which “six amazing young ladies” ranging in ages 16 to 20 will be spotlighted for having demonstrated outstanding commitment to academic life and community service, the longtime Houston businesswoman and philanthropist told Making Headline News this week.
According to an October 2022 report by Southern Living, the word “cotillion” was first used in 18th-century France and England to describe a group dance, considered a forebearer of the square dance (à la the dancing in Pride and Prejudice). This specific dance was considered a good finale for any ball, which seems to translate well to its use today. Cotillion is typically a season of etiquette classes for middle-school-aged children that ends with a final dinner dance where they get to show off what they’ve learned.

Also, cotillion classes are understandably still prevalent in the South whereby there is an opportunity for children to learn all those manners and polite habits, which are considered highly valued alongside their friends and classmates. Whether learning to give a firm handshake or dance the waltz, the skills taught in cotillion classes will come in handy throughout one’s life. Proud parents and teachers gather at the final event — often called the cotillion ball — to watch the participants demonstrate their table manners, conversation etiquette, and dance moves.

This year’s Debutante Ball is the second time Paint The Town Purple In Honor Of Jimmie is hosting such an event.
By definition, a Debutante is a young woman making her formal entrance into society.
“We will honor some amazing young women this year who have done some excellent community service for the community,” Dr. Kay told MHN. “We also continue to provide housing for low-income cancer patients while providing jobs for single parents who help us care for the residents.”
