She considers a field before she buys or accepts it — expanding her business prudently — with her profits, she plants fruitful vines in her vineyard. (Proverbs 31:16 Amplified Bible)
TRIPLE THREAT
As far as her fervent rise as an accomplished author goes, Vanessa J. McCray has been quite busy in recent years.
“These books serve as a vital tool in fulfilling my purpose to educate and train individuals within specific industries while aligning with the principles and strategies of the kingdom of God,” McCray said. “Its goal is to drive impactful change within our communities, empowering individuals to make a positive difference in the lives of others.”
As part of Making Headline News’ 2024 Essence Music Festival advance coverage leading to the “the party with a purpose” event July 5-7 in New Orleans, McCray spoke at length about her highly-anticipated book series:
Camouflage Housing Book I: How To Open and Manage A Transitional Housing Facility – Revised Edition, Camouflage Housing Book II: From Foster Care To Independence – A Comprehensive Guide To Designing & Implementing Lifeskills & Legacy Building Programs For Youth Aging Out of The Foster Care System, and Camouflage Housing Book III: From Vision To Viability: Collaborative Success Uniting Your NPO With A For-Profit Organization.

“The vision for Camouflage Housing Book I was given in 2020 and published in June 2020,” McCray recalls. “In 2023, God began having me to revise the Book I and then downloaded to me Book II and Book III.”
To her distinctly unique credit, McCray’s book series has been as good as advertised since its ceremonious release.
As this gifted author further explains, her decision to produce what she suitably describes as the Camouflage Housing Trilogy stemmed in large part from a deeply rooted desire to share knowledge and empower others within the transitional housing industry.

“With over 21 years of experience in this field and having personally witnessed the challenges and successes of numerous individuals, I felt compelled to respond to the growing demand for guidance and mentorship,” McCray told MHN. “It was during this time of reflection and interaction with aspiring leaders that I began to discern a divine vision unfolding within me.”
Moreover, McCray acknowledged that as individuals from various backgrounds and experiences reached out seeking guidance on how to navigate the complexities of opening and managing transitional housing facilities, she subsequently realized the profound need for a comprehensive resource that could serve as a beacon of knowledge and inspiration.
“The vision to write the Camouflage Housing Trilogy was not simply a personal endeavor but a response to a divine calling to fulfill a greater purpose,” McCray explained. “It became clear to me that these books would be instrumental in equipping others with the tools and insights needed to succeed in their mission to provide safe and supportive environments for vulnerable populations.
“Thus, the Camouflage Housing Trilogy was born out of a deep sense of responsibility and conviction to make a meaningful impact in the lives of others,” McCray continued. “Through these books, I aimed to distill years of experience, wisdom, and divine guidance into a comprehensive resource that would empower individuals to turn their visions into tangible realities. It is my hope that the insights shared within these pages will not only inform but also inspire and transform, ultimately fostering positive change and creating brighter futures for those in need.”
McCray began the legwork for the Camouflage Housing Trilogy in March 2019, having spent somewhere in the neighborhood of four years to complete her featured book projects.
Book I was released in 2020. Books II and III, which took a span of six months to assemble, were completed by March 2024.
“This dedicated timeline allowed me to meticulously craft each book, ensuring that they provided comprehensive guidance and valuable insights for individuals seeking to make a difference in the transitional housing industry,” McCray said. The divine message woven through the pages of the Camouflage Housing Trilogy speaks to the inherent worth and potential of every young person aging out of the foster care system. It is a message of hope, empowerment, and solidarity.”
Besides the Camouflage Housing Trilogy, McCray has authored the following books:
Unlocking The Gift of Salvation, published in August 2017; 30 Days of Triumphant Thinking: A Daily Journal For Changing The Mindset, published in 2015; The Fight Is Fixed: Battles That Have Been Won, an anthology that was published in 2018; Make Your Story Legendary Magazine, published from November 2018 through April 2019; Walking In My Identity (McCray’s chapter in an anthology that was published in 2018; Alive To Thrive: Life After Attempting Suicide: Our Stories (McCray’s chapter in an anthology that was published in 2022).
Other books, she said, are forthcoming, most notably Woman Heal Thyself Journal, Make Your Story Legendary Magazine, as well as two additional journals and three book projects.
Much to her delight, McCray has become the beneficiary of a rash of favorable feedback since the release of the Camouflage Housing Trilogy.
“The feedback received for the Camouflage Housing Trilogy has been overwhelmingly positive and inspiring,” McCray told MHN. “Readers have expressed deep gratitude for the invaluable insights, practical strategies, and heartfelt stories shared within the pages of these books. Many have commented on the transformative impact the trilogy has had on their understanding of transitional housing for foster youth and their motivation to take action in their communities.
“Specifically, readers have praised the comprehensive nature of the trilogy, noting its ability to address the multifaceted challenges faced by youth aging out of the foster care system,” McCray added. “They have commended the practical guidance provided in Book I for opening and managing transitional housing facilities, as well as the empowering approach of Book II in designing life skills and legacy building programs. Moreover, readers have been particularly moved by the message of unity and collaboration conveyed in Book III, highlighting the importance of partnerships between nonprofit and for-profit organizations in achieving sustainable solutions for transitional housing.
Continued McCray: “Overall, the feedback indicates that the Camouflage Housing Trilogy has resonated deeply with readers, inspiring them to make a difference in the lives of foster youth and reaffirming their belief in the power of compassion, solidarity, and collective action.”
