As No. 17 Memphis prepares to square off against No. 10 Penn State Saturday morning at 11 a.m. CST at AT&T Stadium, longtime sports journalist Andre Johnson chimes in on whom he predicts will emerge as the winner of the beautiful Cotton Bowl Classic trophy.
DALLAS — According to ESPN’s Football Power Index, No. 10 Penn State has a 72 percent chance to beat No. 17 Memphis as the Tigers will play in arguably the biggest bowl game in school history. Unlike Memphis, the Nittany Lions boast a tradition-rich program that’s accustomed to playing in major bowl games dating back to the Joe Paterno era.
The Tigers, meanwhile, boast a high-powered offense that customarily scores in bunches. They will need to jump out to an early two or three touchdown margin against Penn State’s potent defense if they are to have a real shot at upsetting a Nittany Lion team that stayed in the College Football Playoff discussion for a majority of the 2019 season.
Memphis’ defense has been lethargic for most of the season and the Tigers had to rely mostly on their resilient offense to bail them out of trouble in close games. Most importantly, the Tigers will need to force turnovers and capitalize off Penn State’s mishaps as a way to dictate the flow and pace of this game.
By and large, I see Penn State heading into the fourth quarter with a 10-point lead and extending that margin midway through the final frame, thus putting this contest out of reach and winning this one in relatively easy fashion.
The Nittany Lions are playing for respect heading into next season. The Tigers, meanwhile, are just happy to be on a massive stage for a change. Therefore, for Memphis, the party ends after today’s pregame tailgating and pep rally.
Pick: Penn State 40, Memphis 17.

Say this about Latisha Holmes Hannah: Because of the abundant life that Christ came to give us, she doesn’t believe that anyone should journey through life, harboring the dreaded spirit of mediocrity.
“Each one of us were created with a purpose, and God did not create us to be mediocre,” said Hannah, when asked why it is imperative that we esteem and inspire others daily. “You are truly great when you are working within your purpose.”
Much to Hannah’s delight and because of the divine calling on her life, she can bolding profess that she undoubtedly is functioning in the purpose for which God created her.
A proud native of Jackson, Mississippi, Hannah widely known as the Chief Executive Officer of V&L Specialties, a nationally-acclaimed sales and marketing company that specializes in print, design and promotional products, just to name a few.
“We are your one stop for all your business solutions needs,” Hannah told Making Headline News during an interview this week.
Not only that, Hannah is the mastermind behind Combat Boots 2 Red Bottoms, a universally-acclaimed global networking community for women veterans as well as women who presently serve our country.
A proud alumna of the University of Maryland University College with a Bachelor of Science degree in Criminal Justice, Hannah is a retired Army veteran. She is currently pursuing a Master’s degree in Marriage and Family Therapy at Capella University.
As it pertains to Combat Boots 2 Red Bottoms, Hannah emphasized that amongst her key objectives is to encourage women to create their own status in life and, most importantly, to appropriately prepare for life after the military.
In essence, Combat Boots 2 Red Bottoms’ primary goal is to provide support through pertinent information and other valuable resources, Hannah, an accomplished motivational speaker, said.
“As an inspirational speaker, I hope my experiences and knowledge help unlock the inner greatness of others,” Hannah said. “God has planted a seed of purpose in all of us, and my message to help them recognize that, to motivate them to take the steps needed, and bring people together to help support them in that effort.”
As for V&L Specialties, Hannah’s business offers an assortment of promotional products to consumers nationwide, most notably marketing display items, printing, a strong web presence, even a strategic social event planning, among other entities.
“V & L Specialties has what you need,” said a spokesperson for the company at http://www.vlspecialties.com. “We provide the best products and services at great values in the convenience of one location.”
Which, by all accounts, is in alignment with Hannah’s notable mission as a thriving, progressive businesswoman.
“My personal mission is for V&L Specialties to be your one stop for all of your marketing in promotional needs,” said Hannah, whose business-related experience spans more than two decades while garnering a national presence. “My personal mission for Combat Boots 2 Red Bottoms is to be able to grow and provide funding for our members to help them in their ventures, provide conferences, retreats, a mentors program, and hard-to-access resources for our members.”
Interestingly, Hannah’s ventures cater to anyone across the country, she acknowledged.
“Everyone that wants to market their business or organization,” said Hannah, who also is a fixture for her husband’s Clinton, Mississippi-based ministry as well as two area non-profit organizations. “As for inspirational speaking, I cater to all age groups to inspire them. I have a message for everyone.”
A distinctly unique, kingdom advancing message that is highlighted by esteeming and inspiring others daily with God, her Helper, leading the way.
“I want everyone to live a fulfilling and wonderful life, and when you truly get to know who you really are, it is a beautiful and amazing experience,” said Hannah, adding that she’s willing to expand her business ventures outside of the country. “You look at life differently. It makes the highs even higher and the lows not so low.
“A mentor of mine told me, ‘Every day is a good day. Some days are just better than others.’ I want others to truly be successful and know they are not on their own in this journey. And every day, I’d want greatness for them no matter what the circumstances are.”
