DALLAS — To his distinct credit, Mon Roberts is having an impact.
A Texas-size impact, if you will.
A 29-year-old native of Dallas, Roberts has been nothing short of impressive, particularly as it pertains to being a positive force in the community.
An avid fan and ambassador of the game of football, considering he plays semi-pro and arena football for the Denton Rhinos and DFW Snipers, Roberts is also active throughout DFW’s Metroplex as a youth volunteer basketball coach.
Aside from coaching and being heavily involved in other sports-related activities, Roberts is widely known as a longtime master barber and fixture for Trendsetters Barber Shop, located at 14 Highway 66 in nearby Garland, Texas.
While Roberts has gone to great lengths to find his niche in what is an ever-so-competitive industry, he has proven to be a young businessman who aspires daily to maximize his potential.
Take, for instance, how Roberts — whose reputation is such that he’s always been goal-oriented — had steadfastly pursued his professional barber license from the renowned Texas Barber College.
Even after earning that credential, he set out to advance his education by earning an Associate’s Degree in Business from Everest College.
As if that wasn’t enough to add to what undoubtedly is a dazzling resume, Roberts is currently enrolled in Richland College, where he is pursuing a Bachelor’s Degree in Education.
To his distinct credit, he’s certainly is having an impact.
A Texas-size impact, if you will.
“All my life, I’ve never won first place,” Roberts told Making Headline News this week. “I’ve learned that winning doesn’t make me.”
Regardless, there is a pivotal lesson from which to learn and embrace through occasional defeats, a trend that has greatly given way to the person Roberts has become — and is becoming.
“The best about losing is that it has made me stronger in a way,” Robert said. “(It taught me) not to repeat the same mistakes and to compete even harder to reach the next stage.”
How intriguing.
He’s got more about which to share, however. So listen.
“Now don’t get me wrong,” Roberts said. “I have won first place in recreational tournaments. But I won’t settle for just that. That’s why I go by (the name) Transcend. It was self-implanted in my head to keep going and going. I want every child I coach to know that they never have to settle in life with something, but to always to challenge themselves to keep going.”
All things considered, the business to which Roberts routinely promotes is Transcend 4 The Kids, which is what he describes as a future sports complex for not just the kids, the entire community.
“It is a place where we together can reach out to each other, lift each other up, inspire, encourage, and motivated each other to go above and beyond the limits that the mind and the world doubt us to achieve,” Roberts explained. “Transcend starts with the youth of all ages, girls and boys, and we encourage them to maximize their talent in sports and to also to help expand their mind for life like they should do in sports.”

As for his everyday profession, Roberts sees barbering as a golden opportunity to impact and empower lives much like coaching.
“What I like the most about my business now is cutting hair,” Roberts said. “I get to make others feel good about themselves and I can be that ear when all they want do is get stuff off their chest. In a way, I kind of get to reach out to the kids, too, and see where their head is at. What I want for the future complex is to be that ear for kids and the community, to help bring each other together for a greater purpose through coaching, mentoring, and guidance on and off the court.”
Roberts said his venture will cater mostly to individuals ranging in ages four-to-17 and that the possibility exist that he will assemble a co-ed league for adults ages 18-and-over.
“The mission is to encourage, inspire and motivate…to give back what was freely given to me,” Roberts said.
