What a difference a five dollar allowance has made.
At the time, Melody Henderson-Davis was just 12 years when, well…perhaps she can explain it best.
“When I was twelve years old, I could not wait to get my five dollar allowance on Friday’s and head straight to the super market and purchase a magazine,” Henderson-Davis, during a recent interview with Making Headline News, said while recalling the memorable events that have greatly inspired her to start her business. “I loved everything the publications represented. Once I would finish reading them, I felt informed. I was aware. I felt empowered and had a better sense of self.”
Consequently, over the next few years, Henderson-Davis began to grasp a feel for what she aspired to do, particularly from a career standpoint.
“I knew then that I wanted to grow up and be the girl in the magazine,” Henderson-Davis said. “No, not the models, although I did go to a few open calls. But the girls that I wanted to be, their names were on the second or third page in the magazine…editor-in-chief, writer, editor, reporter. A journalist. I started then making intentional efforts to develop my skill-set.”
And the rest, as they say, was history.
Upon graduating high school and then enrolling in college — first at Southern University at Shreveport and then the University Louisiana at Lafayette — Henderson-Davis declared Broadcast Journalism as her major.
A native of Shreveport, Louisiana, Henderson-Davis, 34, is presently enrolled in graduate school, where is pursuing a Master’s Degree in Public Relations.
What’s even more intriguing is that even while advancing her education, Henderson-Davis is going to great lengths to broaden her entrepreneurship skills and mechanics as owner and chief executive officer of PR Expressions/Public Relations With Melo Davis, her self-founded public relations boutique agency that is based in the Shreveport area but, according to this accomplished businesswoman, “We have a global reach.”
A business venture that went into full operations approximately one year ago — although Henderson-Davis’ public relations experience spans more than 12 years — PR Expressions/Public Relations With Melo Davis is widely known for working with virtually everyone, most notably small businesses, non-profit organizations, and faith-based and religious institutions, among others.

“As an agency, we increase our clients’ visibility through media exposure and customize business strategies,” Henderson-Davis explained. “Our agency has helped countless new start-ups establish their brands. Some people only had an idea and we consulted them into their launch phase.”
To her credit, Henderson-Davis’ business has made favorable strides since its inception last year, considering she has been afforded the luxury of service clients throughout the United States.
Which, of course, means that if this past year is any indication, PR Expressions/Public Relations With Melo Davis’ best and brightest days are well ahead of it.
“My inspirations comes from those who invest into helping others recognize who are they are,” Henderson-Davis said. “I am thankful for the people who were placed in my path to remind me greatness was within me. When I didn’t operate in it, they challenged me to challenge myself.”
For what it’s worth, those frequent life-enhancing challenges, coupled with her quest to fulfill her dream in this ever-so-competitive Mass Communication industry are paying off mightily for Henderson-Davis, who is continuing to make tremendous strides while functioning diligently in her element.
“This resonated with me because I knew I had it in me,” Henderson-Davis said of the assortment of life lessons she’s learned throughout the years. “I just had to meet the challenge. This is how I overcame the many adversities that I faced.”
Not to mention, sums up how she become inspired to devise ways to see beyond her weekly allowance at the tender age of 12.
Not that she wasn’t merely appreciative of her five dollar weekly allowance. But Henderson-Davis doesn’t shy away from the notion that it was due in large part to her small weekly pension she customarily acquired as a child that essentially enabled her to discover the passion and purpose for which God has created her.
“I always found a way to meet the challenge in order beat the challenge,” Henderson-Davis said. “Most times, it wasn’t right away, but I never gave up on the possibility. My mindset has always been win-win. Even when I was failing, I knew one day I would thrive. I simply had to implement strategic planning.”
