Georgia author Brittney Sherell on her inspiring new book: ‘There is life after foster care, no matter the circumstances’

Andre Johnson May 6, 2020

Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up. (Galatians 6:9 NIV)

PROSPEROUS SEASON

DREAMS UNFOLDING — Much to Georgia author Britney Sherell’s delight, she’s ceremoniously taken one monumental step toward making her lofty ambitions a reality with the much-anticipated release of A Suitcase And A Dream: My True Story From Foster To Prosper, her spiritually-empowering, emotionally-driven book that debuted in March 2019.

Brittney Sherell was determined not to allow that stormy situation to consume her spiritually.

If nothing else, she was destined to make the most of what undoubtedly was a challenging, yet disheartening encounter.
“God gave me the vision to write this book when I was 13 (years old) in my group home,” Sherell told Making Headline News this week. “I knew I wanted to write a book about my life in foster care and have my story on Lifetime (Network).”

Released officially on March 11, 2019, Sherell said the divine message she aspires to send to her reading audience is that God has infused within the wherewithal to withstand any of the fiery darts the adversary tosses in our direction to challenge our faith.

An awe-inspiring written work that is comprised of 122 pages in length, Sherell’s A Suitcase And A Dream: My True Story From Foster To Prosper depicts the life of a nine-year-old girl who thinks she has nothing to live for, in large part because her mother is a drug addict, according to a detailed introduction of this work at Amazon.com.

By and large, Sherell, along with her three sisters, lived from what this writer describes as “pillar to post” all the while their mother tried to keep the family together. But to no avail, she couldn’t garner the breakthrough she desperately sought primarily because she couldn’t outlast the dreaded addiction.

“Imagine experiencing sexual abuse at age (nine years of age) and no one seemed to care,” said an Amazon spokesperson for Sherell’s A Suitcase And A Dream: My True Story From Foster To Prosper.

Moreover, as the family experienced perpetual transition, it was often in abandoned houses with no running water and no furniture, Sherell recalls.

“There is life after foster care,” Sherell said. “No matter the circumstances, you can overcome, so don’t let the foster care system be the reason why you stop going after your dreams.”

Simply put, this Fairburn, Georgia-based author appropriately labels A Suitcase And A Dream a tear-jerking story of a nine-year-old girl who subsequently was faced with what she deems the atrocities of abuse, hunger, homelessness, abandonment, finally ending up in the dreaded foster care system.

And like any system, she acknowledged, there are problems with “trust being a major one,” she said.

For what it’s worth, Brittney Sherell tells her story transparently and intimately,” said an Amazon spokesperson for Sherell’s initial book. “She shares what it’s like to be that girl, who loses hope of ever having a family that cares about her.”

In addition, in Sherell’s A Suitcase And A Dream: My True Story From Foster To Prosper, her readers learn specifically what goes on in the mind of a young girl who develops a rash of anger issues, trust issues, PTSD and even attempts suicide.

Not only that, Sherell’s audience become enlightened about ultimately emerges as the redemption through her story, one that’s accompanied by God’s love, purpose and providence — all the while learning the importance of being accountable for each other or, as Sherell’s points out, “being our sister’s keeper.”

When asked what was the single, most underlying reason she chose to produce A Suitcase And A Dream: My True Story From Foster To Prosper, Sherell emphasized, among other things, sharing of her assortment of testimonies was a part of the God-mandated purpose.

“I wanted people to know my story and I wanted more foster parents to take in teenagers,” Sherell, a native of Flint Michigan, said. “They are the most forgotten about in the system, and I want other children in foster care to see me as an inspiration to them, want to give them hope and let them know there is life after foster care and that they, too, could overcome the system.”

Released officially on March 11, 2019, Sherell said the divine message she aspires to send to her reading audience is that God has infused within us the wherewithal and perseverance to withstand any of the fiery darts the adversary customarily tosses in our direction to challenge our faith.

“There is life after foster care,” Sherell said. “No matter the circumstances, you can overcome, so don’t let the foster care system be the reason why you stop going after your dreams.”

For Sherell, it took her all but 13 years to finish her book which, in turn, enabled her to finally put her dreaded season in foster care where it belongs: behind her.

LIFETIME NETWORK MOVIE?

An awe-inspiring written work that is comprised of 122 pages in length, Sherell’s A Suitcase And A Dream: My True Story From Foster To Prosper depicts the life of a nine-year-old girl who thinks she has nothing to live for, in large part because her mother is a drug addict, according to a detailed introduction of this work at Amazon.com.

Surely, times were hard. Nevertheless, she steadfastly stayed with God, Who ultimately made a way out of no way on her behalf.

“I became discouraged along the way and wasn’t sure if I could do it,” Sherell said. “But I did it. I overcame. “(Now I’m striving) to get more foster parents to take in teens and to keep sharing my testimony. I wouldn’t be here if it weren’t not for God on my side. I am grateful.”

All because was determined not to allow that stormy situation to consume her spiritually.

If nothing else, she was destined to make the most of what undoubtedly was a challenging, yet disheartening ordeal.
