“I experienced multiple stages during my journey,” Dr. Bagby, during a recent interview with Making Headline News, said, recalling the memorable developments surrounding her notable book projects. “It is my practice to pray about the book topics and the order in which to write them. At the start of each year, I keep a list of ideas and apply Proverbs 3:6, which states, ‘In all your ways acknowledge him….’ The original language’s meaning of acknowledge is to invite in. I consult with God when choosing the order of my projects and what I should tackle first.”
As part of Making Headline News’ 2023 Essence Music Festival advance coverage leading to the “the party with a purpose” event June 29-July 3 in New Orleans, Dr. Velma said it had been a while since she had last written about relationship-related issues.

“I had not written about dating, relationships, and marriage since I released my first book in 2018,” she said. “At the beginning of 2021, I prayed to God, ‘God, what should I write my next book about?’ Later, after that prayer, I heard my husband speak a message to the single women at the church one Sunday. What he said stuck with me: ‘If the fish aren’t biting ladies, it’s time to try a different bait.’ Although I assumed this would become the title of my next book, it did turn out to be the subject matter.”
And just like that, the Hercules, California-based writer was on a prelude to composing what is suitably dubbed The CATCH Series, a trend that is comprised of three books to date.
The first book of Dr. Bagby’s series is entitled, The CATCH No One Wants, which debuted in April 2022.
A fascinating, riveting book that is comprised of 184 pages, Dr. Bagby’s The CATCH No One Wants is the story of Veronica Dawson (a PK or pastor’s kid) who frantically searches for potential husbands in all the wrong places, according to a detailed synopsis of this book at Amazon.com. Veronica, in fact, is a 32-year-old successful millennial who is obsessed with getting married because she has already missed her original goal: to be a wife by (the age of) 30.
Meanwhile, her father, Greyson, watches her wrong choices and sees the men mistreat his daughter. Although he’s frustrated, he seeks God’s direction. As a result, Greyson’s answered prayers prompt him to use what he knows as an expert fisher. He invites Veronica on a two-day fishing trip for a one-on-one intervention. She does not know that her dad is on a mission to rescue her through their Christian faith teaching about dating with an intent to marry.
Also released in April 2022, Dr. Bagby’s The CATCH No One Wants: Homework Basket is a 59-page written work that vividly captures all the tools Veronica’s father provided her during and after his intervention, as mentioned in an in-depth breakdown of this author’s book via Amazon.com.
Interestingly enough, he asked Veronica to complete every task to help her apply the intentional dating principles he taught — to discover the husband she deserves.

And then there’s Book 3 of this series, The WRONG CATCH, which debuted in April 2022.
Accompanied by 102 pages, Greyson presents trophy fish as the new characters in his stories about dating the wrong men, according to a thorough introduction of Dr. Bagby’s book at Amazon.com.
In this book, word spread like wildfire after his daughter’s Sunday testimony, during which she shared her dad’s fish stories, describing the wrong guys she dated: the catfish who loves garbage, the sturgeon who likes to nibble, the salmon who hates getting caught, and the pufferfish who is handsome until agitated.

As more women heard the stories, they couldn’t get enough and wanted more. Some commented, ‘I can’t believe I dated all those fish characters,’ while others responded, ‘The use of fish personalities as men were genius.’
In response to the demand to know more about the stories, Greyson and Veronica, to their credit, decided to host a conference. But this time, Greyson focused on The WRONG CATCH.
Having graced the pages of 16 books to date, Dr. Bagby said Books 4 and 5 of The CATCH Series are currently in the works, although a timetable for the releases was not disclosed by press time.

“I will be adding books four and five to The CATCH Series,” Dr. Bagby told MHN. “Book No. 4 will shift to address the women men choose as the wrong catch. The analogies will use a variety of insects and animals to describe the female characters in The WRONG CATCH: They’ll Tear Down The House. Readers have already expressed a demand for more fish analogies related to men and Book No. 5 is a return to those stories.”
As Dr. Bagby recalls, she sensed her career as a business leader and coach was finished after retiring as Deputy Administrator for the state government, a stint that lasted 38 years.
“Then my daughters encouraged me to write my first book,” Dr. Bagby recalls. “It was then I realized this was not the conclusion to my story. God blessed me with a marriage that has lasted 49 years, and I have been providing marriage preparation and pre-marriage counseling sessions for the last 30 years.
“It has been discovered through these sessions that, despite the great need for talks and preparation on the subject, very little is taking place. As a Proverbs 2 woman, I am determined to achieve my goal and communicate the message.”
Mission accomplished, as evidenced by the rash of rave reviews Dr. Bagby has fielded as an accomplished author, particularly since the release of what is now the popular The CATCH Series.
