EMBRACING HER TRUTHS
HOUSTON — Brittney Carr couldn’t merely wait until June 1.
Just after midday CST on Thursday, Carr hastened to her social media timeline, where she disclosed some good fortune she’s seemingly been destined to announce for quite some time.
Said Carr before her sizable gallery of followers via Facebook:
“I am super excited to make this announcement!!!!! My first children’s book will be released June 1, 2024!!!!!!! This book teaches young kids about body boundaries. It also teaches them how to communicate and trust someone to tell if their body boundaries are violated. I would recommend parents to get this book for your children because often times this can be a hard conversation to have with children.
“This book gets on their level and explains things. I pray this book reaches many children and helps them overcome the silence they feel as if they can’t speak openly about!!! Get ready and be on the lookout. #Share…I want to reach as many children as I possibly can!”

The book to which Carr is alluding is Kimmie-Coco’s Courageous Choice, her highly-anticipated children’s book that had been in the works since April and took the Houston-based author approximately a month to construct.
April is recognized annually as Sexual Assault Awareness Month.
Given the overwhelming reaction to the ceremonious announcement of her sophomore written work, it’s safe to assume Carr’s Kimmie-Coco’s Courageous Choice figures to enjoy a considerable amount of success — much sooner than later.
As part of Making Headline News‘ 2024 Essence Music Festival advance coverage leading to the “the party with a purpose” event July 5-7 in New Orleans, Carr emphasized, among other things her latest book comes amid her having been sexually assaulted as a child.
SALUTING WOMEN WHO SHAPE OUR WORLD
According to Child Sexual Abuse Statistics compiled by the National Center for Victims of Crime, the reported cited the following facts:
- One in five girls and one in 20 boys is a victim of child sexual abuse
- Self-report studies show that 20 percent of adult females and five-to-10 percent of adult males recall a childhood sexual assault or sexual abuse incident
- During a one-year period in the U.S., 16 percent of youth ranging in ages 14 to 17 had been sexually victimized
- Over the course of their lifetime, 28 percent of U.S. youth ranging in ages 14 to 17 had been sexually victimized
- Children are most vulnerable to CSA between the ages of 7 and 13.
Also, the CSA cited that according to a 2003 National Institute of Justice report, three out of four adolescents who have been sexually assaulted were victimized by someone they knew well.
MAKING MAMA PROUD
Said Carr of a tumultuous adolescent encounter that, by all accounts, altered the overall landscape of her life:
“I didn’t know how to tell anyone. I felt silenced and developed so much anxiety from having to keep such a big secret. When I got the courage to speak up years later, I felt like a burden had been lifted off of me. I felt free. It’s a lot of kids that go through this. I want to reach them and let them know they are not alone. I want them to know that it’s okay. It’s not their fault and (I’m destined) to teach them how to reach out to someone that’s a trusted adult.”
A book that is currently in the presale order phase, Carr stressed the divine message she’s aiming to send to her reading audience is that those victimized by sexual assault don’t have to withhold that which could potentially shatter their lives in ways unimaginable.
“(It’s okay) to come out and speak out,” Carr said. “Don’t be afraid. Be courageous. It will set you free and you can get the help you need.”
FOR STARTERS
Even before the official release of Kimmie-Coco’s Courageous Choice, Carr has emerged as the beneficiary of an outpour of support for a book that figures to enrich generations for years to come.
“The feedback I have gotten has been very positive and inspirational,” Carr told MHN. “A lot of people tell me this is exactly what we need for our youth.”
Carr’s latest book comes approximately 5 ½ years after she made her authorship debut with the release of F.E.A.R., an acronym that stands for False Evidence Appearing Real.
“God gave me the vision to write (F.E.A.R.) one day when my husband told me that I needed to tell people my story and that I would help many people with my testimony,” Carr told Making Headline News during an April 2019 interview. “So, God told me to just start writing. So, I started to write my story.”
FAMILY FOCUS
Other books, Carr said, are on the horizon.
“I plan to write more children’s books about what they deal with in their everyday life,” Carr said. “Things children don’t speak about. I’m blessed to be able to be an understanding parent and talk about things with my children. They tell me everything (Carr said with a grin)…even stuff I might not want to hear.
“We have a very open relationship. So, I want to speak to children through my books. I also would like to encourage parents to listen to their children and give them a safe space to be open and vulnerable with them. Allow children to express their feelings and teach them healthy ways of communicating so they learn how to communicate at a young age and learn to trust their parents.”
