“When I was in high school my counselor told me I wasn’t college material,” Johnson recalled. “She suggested I get a job instead. That one incident has been a driving force in my life…not to prove her wrong, but to prove to myself that I could achieve anything I put my mind to.”

“My biggest influence is my mother,” Johnson said. “She raised eight children by herself. She taught me the importance of hard work, commitment and perseverance.”

What it all boils down to, Johnson emphasized, is routinely esteeming others and impacting lives — one life at a time.

“If one person can say I made them feel worthy, valued, cared for,” said Johnson, “I’ve done my job.”

Which, to her credit, is one of the things that undoubtedly ring true as it pertains to Shawna Johnson.
