Collierville offensive lineman Kendarius Malone’s mother writes him an open letter as he lobbies for football scholarship

MEMPHIS — Kendarius Malone can be appropriately described as an opportunistic student athlete.

STOCK RISING — Aside from helping steer the Collierville High to a third place finish in the always rugged 6A Region 7 district, Kendarius Malone enjoyed a resourceful, yet crucial senior season which, to his credit, had given way to at least one college thrusting him under its radar. According to the 17-year-old Collierville native, Mid-South Conference member Kentucky Christian University has expressed interest in Malone, who earned All-Region Honorable Mention for his valiant contributions.

Consider, for instance, how Malone, who recently wrapped up his prep football tenure for Collierville High, had gone about doing the necessary things to enhance his stock as he continues to lobby for a full ride scholarship.

A 6-foot, 260-pound left tackle, Malone made appearances — thus made his presence felt — this past spring and summer during camps at the University of Memphis, Belhaven College, Austin Peay State, not to mention the Team USA Camp.

“In the Team USA Camp, I made it to the final round to be able to play for the United States,” an enthused Malone told Making Headline News this week. “However, I had to withdraw so that I would not lose my eligibility to play for my senior year because of TSSAA rules.”

Although Malone didn’t savor the chance to showcase his football mechanics for his country, his immeasurable body of work, nevertheless, undoubtedly was nothing short of impressive.

For starters, he was the catalyst his senior campaign for a Collierville team that finished the season with a 5-6 overall record, but still managed to advance to the opening round of the TSSAA state playoffs.

EYE OF THE DRAGON

**SOMEONE SIGN THIS KID —** Malone, who recently wrapped up his prep football tenure for Collierville High, had gone about doing the necessary things to enhance his stock as he continues to lobby for a full ride scholarship.

Much to Malone’s delight, no can attest to how great a season he enjoyed more than his mother, Jennifer Bogan.

**ALL AMERICAN IN HIS OWN RIGHT —** A 6-foot, 260-pound left tackle, Malone made it appearance — thus made his presence felt — this past spring and summer during camps at the University of Memphis, Belhaven College, Austin Peay State, not to mention the Team USA Camp.

Hours after the Collierville’s team banquet Monday night, Bogan took to her Facebook page, where she assembled an open letter to her son in relatively loving, emotional fashion.

Said Bogan in a spirited, tear-jerking, early morning post that was made public before her nearly-400 social media followers:

Congratulations to Kendarius on a wonderful time at the CHS football banquet. You didn’t receive the top award that you wanted, but baby, the champion lies within your heart. You fought a great battle, and to even see last night happen and for that, there is no trophy, certificate, banner, or plaque worthy enough to symbolize how blessed you are after all that you have been through. You didn’t lose sight of your dreams and didn’t lose your faith in seeing your senior football season happen! Your story is still unfinished. The reason of this path is still unknown, but what we do know is there is purpose behind every situation! The thing I love about you is no matter what, you have not gotten discouraged and still hours later, you looked on to what’s getting ready to happen in the next chapter and the next doors that’s opening, and for that I’m sooo proud of you! Again, congratulations on the award you did receive…keep going and keep having the heart of a champion in all the things you do…with God, ALL things are possible!!! Mama loves you!

Talk about an encouraging, open letter for the ages — this from a mother whom, years ago, didn’t sense her son would become engaged in athletics.

“I never thought that Kendarius would play football, because he was never interested in sports growing up,” Bogan, a Pharmacy Technician Supervisor at Baptist Memorial Hospital, said. “He was in the shadows of his older brother’s basketball teams, being the water boy. I never thought he would play football until he started his eighth year at First Assembly Christian School and the coaches kept begging him to play and told me that they see so much potential in him.

**HOLDING IT DOWN —** Malone was the catalyst his senior campaign for a Collierville team that finished the season with a 5-6 overall record, but still managed to advance to the opening round of the TSSAA state playoffs.

“However, I didn’t think anything of it and had said ‘No’ to him playing football until one day he came home with pads, and a consent form.”

Malone, as Bogan recalled, was 14 years old at the time.

A little more than three years removed from having come home with a consent form to play competitive football, Bogan’s son now finds himself just one National Letter of Intent signing away from attending college free of charge.

What a difference having initially assumed the role as a water boy has made.

When asked what kind of player will a college be inheriting if he’s offered a football scholarship, Malone said, “A player that is passionate about the game of football… (one who is) ready to learn and be taught how to excel at the college level, a player that is open to all possibilities, and one the will give 110 percent on every snap and every down.

That, after all, practically sums up why he can be appropriately described as an opportunistic student athlete.

For what it’s worth, this accomplished and resourceful Corporate America professional had no choice but to pause and lend her ear to that about which was directed toward her.

“With obstacles comes progress,” a dear friend told Wynette during a phone conversation as she tuned in with pure wonderment.

In fact, given the awesome assignment to which she has been introduced, she doesn’t seem to mind sharing before the world her assortment of past hurdles and obstacles, these seemingly discomforting occurrences that have molded and developed and positioned her to possess the best that God had in store from her from the outset.

**SHE’S STILL STANDING —** It is due in large part to Wynette’s bend-but-don’t-break faith, coupled with her fervent desire to esteem others highly than herself, that she is thoroughly convinced she’s destined to tackle and embrace yet another awe-inspiring venture at this stage in her life.

“Being a person who’s experienced physical, emotional, verbal and financial abuse, a person who was once shunned for being who I truly am — that (actually) was hurt, anger, and resentment fueled me — but after much prayer and support from those closest to me, love, peace, and forgiveness has sustained me,” Wynette said. “I’ve been encouraging and building individuals that I see or feel are in need of it from as early as high school. Professionally, I’m just starting.”

What better time to start than now, especially considering she’s thoroughly convinced that it was God Who was working diligently behind the scenes on her behalf all along?

“This is something God has put on my heart and in my heart, but if I must give credit to any human being, it’d have to be my father, Pastor Tommie L. Watkins,” Wynette said. “He is the most selfless person I know. He’s spent his years, from as early as I remember, leading, helping, encouraging, praying for and building others up.”

Interestingly and to her credit, Wynette seemed destined not only walk in the footsteps of her father but, most importantly, to help advance the kingdom with God, her Helper, leading the way.

“There are people going to their graves everyday with gifts that have yet to be utilized, hearts filled with love that they were too afraid to give,” Wynette said. “There are hurt people, broken people, depressed people, people who can’t and don’t realize their worth simply because of abuse, depression, and low self-esteem. This shouldn’t be.

**THE PROVERBS 31 FACTOR —** *Interestingly and to her credit, Wynette seemed destined not only walk in the footsteps of her father but, most importantly, to help advance the kingdom with God, her Helper, leading the way.*

“God has a purpose for your life,” Wynette continued. “Gifts created just for you. I want people to see it. There are no nobodies on this earth. God created everybody to be somebody special. I just want to be one of the tools He uses to get that message across for as far as He allows my voice and physical presence to reach.”

And just like that, she’s effectively embracing the purpose for which God created, effectively embracing a lofty, God-mandated assignment she sensed would ultimately come to fruition at some point in time.

As Anfernee “Penny” Hardaway prepares to begin a new era as the new University of Memphis men’s basketball coach this week when the Tigers host a sold out Memphis Madness in FedExForum, one longtime U of M faithful has something intriguing to pass along to the Bluff City hoops legend.

Longtime entertainer Gregory Lofton, a native Memphian, the CEO of Silky International Records and the mastermind behind the hit song, “Tiger Fever,” doesn’t shy away from the notion that he’s determined to garner the attention of Hardaway, a former U of M star and four-time NBA All-Star.

“I want it to be known that a song by an unsigned artist and publisher is worth $250,000 per year to sample and with all monies due according to the copyright act under a master licensing agreement that covers The Penny Hardaway Show, Stadium use, performance and broadcast royalties, CD and DVD production, TV, Movies, Film, etc.,” Lofton told Making Headline News during a recent interview.

**PENNY FOR YOUR THOUGHTS —** Longtime entertainer **Gregory Lofton**, a native Memphian, the CEO of Silky International Records and the mastermind behind the hit song, “Tiger Fever,” doesn’t shy away from the notion that he’s determined to garner the attention of Hardaway, a former U of M star and four-time NBA All-Star.

“The University of Memphis, the Rebounders Club, and Highland Hundred Club know about this project, but I will not give my hard work away for exposure and season tickets,” Lofton continued. “Writing exposure instead of a dollar amount on a check will buy me nothing for my hard work.”

Lofton, meanwhile, was extremely complementary of one Mid-South radio personality, who deemed it essential to applaud his immeasurable body of work as an entertainer.

“My strongest supporter at the time I was trying to promote Tiger Fever was John ‘The Rainman’ Rainey,’ said Lofton, alluding to the sports media personality for WHBQ 56AM’s The Southern Sports Report. If you want to know how powerful a theme song like ‘Jingle Tiger Fever’ is, talk to him.”

According to Lofton, Rainey had gone as far as to play Tiger Fever during Memphis’ NCAA Final Four run in 2008, a sequence that ended with the Tigers losing to Kansas in overtime, 75-68, in the championship game.

“(Rainey) used Tiger Fever to open his show and played several snit bits of it within the first hour of the show,” Lofton said.

Now with the Hardaway coaching era looming, coupled with all of the hoopla surrounding Tiger hoops, Lofton remains hopeful that the former Memphis Treadwell High star will follow Rainey’s lead and tune in to his compelling musical project.

Hardaway, 47, was hired as head coach by his alma mater on March 19, having replaced Tubby Smith, who was fired after two seasons at Memphis.

Lofton was rather forthright in his proposition to Hardaway.

“I’m willing to transfer the rights over to you, Penny, to own it outright,” Lofton said. “You and I are North Memphis products and I support you. I only met you once when I was with Kevin Morrow. I will do for you what I would do for the university administrators. You will own everything outright. The whole collection promotes Memphis and the Tigers. I put my hard earned money and intellectual properties into this project and I deserve financial gratification.”

Besides Rainey, Lofton said that U of M Band Director Albert Nuguen is familiar with his popular hit that is “Tiger Fever.”

All of which is why he has extended a plea to Hardaway to strongly consider listening to what could very well become an enjoyable and fun trend for U of M sports fans.

“I was asking the one-year sampling rate of $250,000 as a buyout price that I knew they were going to try and juggle with price lowering strategies,” Lofton said. “The administration will not deal with me, because of my deep knowledge of the music industry game and knowing my worth when it comes to licensing. They will deal with (Hardaway) if (he) owns the rights in full for (his) program.”

Along with his direct proposition to Hardaway to assume copyrights of his work, Lofton is pleading with the local media to look into his music.

“The Memphis media — even though they never did a story on me — know about my work,” Lofton said.

Deborah Marion, the mother of slain NBA player Lorenzen Wright, will be the keynote speaker.

Drafted with the seventh overall pick in the 1996 NBA draft by the Los Angeles Clippers, Wright is a former University of Memphis star, who enjoyed a 13-year NBA career that also included stints with the Atlanta Hawks, Memphis Grizzlies, Sacramento Kings, and Cleveland Cavaliers.

In a July 2010, Wright was killed and his body was found on July 28 in a wooded area on Callis Cutoff Road, just west of Hacks Cross Road.

On December 15, 2017, Wright’s ex-wife, Sherra Wright-Robinson, was arrested in California in connection with the murder.

As for his forthcoming Black & White Affair Banquet, Williams emphasized, among other things, that the Memphis chapter will aid mostly the underserved parents of murdered children and siblings, particularly assisting them to navigate through the grief process and through the criminal justice system.

Williams’ Always Giving Back Memphis, Inc. has been serving Greater Memphis since 2006 and became a full fledge non-profit organization in 2014.

As for his personal mission for having adopted a passion for giving back, Williams acknowledged that it all goes back to what he describes as his “humble beginnings.”

“I been blessed by having a pretty successful life,” Williams said. “My personal mission is to give back and serve at every possible opportunity.”

“I refuse.”

For Chasity L. Toler, those two simple words, by all accounts, have greatly given way to a defining moment, of sorts, for this Mid-South-area businesswoman.

For all the right reasons, too.

It all unfolded sometime in November 2013, during which Toler was working diligently in her element as a Parent Educator.

What transpired shortly thereafter had essentially changed the overall landscape of her young life.

**TO LEGIT TO QUIT —** A native Memphian, Chasity L. Toler has gone to great lengths to become an ambassador for Multiple Sclerosis by establishing the Step by Step Multiple Sclerosis Awareness Foundation, her notable nonprofit organization that went into operations in December 2017 and is centered largely on her ability to educate the masses on this disease.

“I was getting prepared for worked and when I stepped out the restroom, my fiancé stated you had a stroke,” Toler, 44, told Making Headline News during an interview this week.

Consequently, Toler had gone into “shock” and was eventually rushed to a local hospital, a shocking, disheartening turn of events that resulted in her being confined to a hospital bed for approximately one week.

Talk about an emotionally scary sequence that would ultimately cause one to assess just how precious, but fragile, life is.

Still, as far as Toler was concerned, she simply “refused” — refused to view and label her apparent downtrodden situation as a forthcoming death sentence.

“I was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis,” recalled Toler, uttering the word with such eloquence, yet not knowing what it is in any way, shape, or form.

“I knew nothing about it and had no one to turn to but Google,” Toler, a single mother of two sons (ages 21 and nine) explained. “(There was) no help here in the city. The closest help was in Nashville and they only did a yearly walk, but nothing else.”

“I refuse,” Toler would often say until she reaped the favorable results she so desperately sought. “I began sharing my journey and testimony on Facebook, and so many individuals started reaching out to me.”

While Toler is steadily devising ways to promote and enhance her nonprofit organization, she certainly appears headed in the right direction.

Amongst the reasons is that her organization services individuals of all ages or, as she acknowledges, “from teens to elderly.”

“Some are mobile and some are not mobile or they need assistants or (are placed) in nursing homes,” said Toler, who holds an Associate’s Degree in Surgical Technology from National College .

Much to delight, Toler doesn’t shy away from the notion that she’s destined to view her diagnosis with MS from a positive perspective, a trend that has prompted a few prominent local officials to applaud her valiant efforts.

“I have met the City of Memphis Mayor (Jim Strickland),” said Toler, who also generated headlines on Congressmen Steve Cohen’s newsletter.

“My mission is to empower, equip, improve, and support the quality of life through advocacy and education for all affected by Multiple Sclerosis directly and indirectly,” said Toler, whose organization is preparing to host a fashion show on October 27th at The Haven in Downtown Memphis.

Besides a few local political figures, Toler’s supporting cast is comprised largely of her sons, she said.

“My sons inspire me to push and to fight through it all…seeing my oldest go through depression when I got diagnosed and our life hit rock bottom with losing my job at the time I was diagnosed because Tennessee is an at-will state and they terminated my job,” Toler said. “I heard ‘No’ so much, I just knew a ‘Yes’ was on the way.”

**GOD’S PLAN —** “I refuse,” Toler would often say until she reaped the favorable results she so desperately sought. “I began sharing my journey and testimony on Facebook, and so many individuals started reaching out to me.”

Indeed it was. And to her credit, it was because she never gave up.

“I refuse,” Toler often says.

Until someone tells her “Yes.”

“You never know how strong you are until you have no choice but to be strong,” Toler said. “I may have Multiple Sclerosis, but Multiple Sclerosis doesn’t have me. To me, MS stand for Many Successes.”

“(I was) just writing down laughter and pain while (reminiscing on) the stories I was listening to,” Carr said. “(Then) God got His fingerprints all over me and my pad in doing this book.”

“My message to (my reading) audience is simple and Dr. (Martin Luther) King Jr. said it best: ‘There’s nothing in all the world more dangerous than sincere ignorance and conscientious stupidity. You have the morale obligation to be intelligent. We must teach our kids to strive for excellence and don’t move the mountain. Give them strength to climb.’”
