FAMILY FOCUS

Christopher J. Mercer was only keeping it real.
For what it’s worth, this thriving, progressive businessman didn’t merely think it necessary to adopt a competitive edge in order to emerge as successful businessman.
“My journey wasn’t driven by competition with other people,” Mercer explained. “It was driven by the desire to become a better version of myself than I was yesterday.”
Much to Mercer’s delight, such an unappareled drive had ultimately given way to the startup of Family First Initiative, his Connecticut-based featured business endeavor that has become a fixture for helping individuals and families build stronger foundations through leadership development, financial literacy, workforce readiness, wellness, mentorship, and community-based programs, according to a detailed synopsis of this company via https://familyfirstinitiative.org/.
In essence, Mercer’s assortment of Family First Initiative programs customarily support youth, young adults, parents, caregivers, and community members at different stages of life through practical learning and shared growth.

During a weekend interview with Making Headline News as part of its 2026 Essence Music Festival national coverage for “the party with a purpose” event July 3-5 in New Orleans, Mercer deemed it essential to vividly recall the awe-inspiring developments that fueled his desire to established what undoubtedly has become one of the finest nonprofit organizations of its kind.
“Around 2010, after walking away from my oldest daughter’s mother, I made a commitment to myself that although I didn’t have to remain in that relationship, I would always remain a father to my daughter,” Mercer explained. “She was only one year old, and I wanted to become the kind of man she could be proud of one day.”
As Mercer acknowledged, he admittedly wanted to leave his child with more than just memories.
“I wanted to leave values, discipline, service, and an example of what intentional living looks like,” Mercer told MHN. “As I continued raising my children, advocating for better opportunities for youth, serving my community, and navigating my own journey through financial literacy and leadership development, I experienced many of the same hardships and instability that countless families face every day.”
For Mercer, it was long thereafter that Family First Initiative has become a full-fledge reality, a rising, credible family-oriented organization that figures to help enrich and impact families for years to come.

Amongst the obvious reason for Mercer’s flourishing program: many families want better opportunities for their children, yet they don’t know where to begin.
“Through that journey, I realized there are far more families living this reality than there should be,” Mercer said. “Families are surviving instead of planning. Parents want better for their children but often lack the tools. Knowledge isn’t being passed between generations. Children inherit struggle instead of opportunity. Communities have programs, but too often there’s no roadmap that connects them into a lifelong journey.”
Interestingly enough, Mercer admittedly wasn’t merely open to the concept of creating “another service” for people to buy.
“I wanted to remove barriers so families could invest their resources into actually building their future,” he said. “That’s why we’ve intentionally designed our programs to be free or low cost whenever possible.”
FAITH & FAMILY

After implementing the necessary legwork, Mercer’s Family First Initiative officially went into operation in May 2025.
“Everything finally came together,” Mercer, a native of Stamford, Connecticut, said. “I realized my passion had met its purpose. That’s when I knew this wasn’t just community service anymore. This would become my life’s work.”
A 2002 graduate of Bridgeport’s Central High School, Mercer said his educational journey has always been driven by a desire to better understand leadership, business, youth development, and human behavior.
He studied Small Business Management at Asnuntuck Community College. Consequently, he engaged in dance choreography and vocal entertainment at the University of the Arts in Philadelphia and Child Psychology at the University of Connecticut.
“While each experience shaped me, my greatest education has come from raising my family, serving my community, and learning through both success and hardship,” Mercer said.
Since the startup of his nonprofit organization, Mercer describes the support for the masses as “incredibly encouraging.”
“Participants consistently tell us they leave our programs feeling more informed, more confident, and better prepared to build their future,” Mercer told MHN. “Parents have shared that they’ve seen noticeable improvements in their children’s attitudes, grades, responsibility, spending habits, and desire to serve their communities. Young people begin thinking differently about leadership, entrepreneurship, education, and their future.
“Community partners have embraced our mission because they see the same needs we do,” Mercer continued. “They understand that lasting change happens when organizations work together rather than in isolation. “What surprised me most is how many people believed legacy was something reserved for wealthy families. Once they understand that legacy begins with knowledge and is strengthened through consistent action, everything changes.”
Just as Mercer had come to realize some 16 years ago.
