Mid-South businesswoman Erica Hughes’ The Vegan Mom has been deemed one of the finest of its kind in Memphis

Andre Johnson July 20, 2020

A man’s gift makes room for him, And brings him before great men. (Proverbs 18:16 NKJV)

A VEGAN GAME CHANGER

TEN-NES-SEE HER SUCCESS — An accomplished health and wellness professional in her own right, Erica Hughes is the owner and CEO of The Vegan Mom, her Memphis-based venture that, much to her delight, has garnered a national presence since its inception in February 2018.

Just because the world has been reduced to an unlikely — and indefinite — shelter-in-place, doesn’t mean that people should neglect possessing and savoring a healthy lifestyle.

If nothing else, now undoubtedly is a golden opportunity for people to stay in tuned to their overall health, according to longtime Mid-South entrepreneur Erica Renee’ Hughes.
An accomplished health and wellness professional in her own right, Hughes is the owner and CEO of The Vegan Mom, her Memphis-based venture that, much to her delight, has garnered a national presence since its ceremoniously inception in February 2018.
“Although I’m based right here in Memphis, Tennessee, I’ve had the pleasure of shipping my food as far as North Dakota,” Hughes, 51, told Making Headline News this week.
Located at 8303 Championship Drive, Hughes’ The Vegan Mom has become a Bluff City fixture for customarily providing what she describes as healthy alternative to soul food, particularly by way of delectable meal prep and weekly lunch specials.

Widely regarded as one the Mid-South’s finest vegan establishments, Hughes said amongst the trends she loves about her business is routinely bringing smiles to the faces of her customers and devoted clients, all the while promoting the significance of living and savoring a healthy lifestyle through some good ole Southern soul food.

“I love the fact that I get to share my love for food with the world,” Hughes, a graduate of Memphis Hamilton High, said. “Not only that, but I get to show them that healthy eating is fun eating.”

OOOOOOOOWEEEE! Located at 8303 Championship Drive, Hughes’ The Vegan Mom has become a Bluff City fixture for customarily providing what she describes as healthy alternative to soul food, particularly by way of delectable meal prep and weekly lunch specials.

Especially in throughout a Memphis-metropolitan area that has become a formidable American city that steadfastly prides itself on remarkably brilliant music…oh, and outrageously delicious soul food, something by which Hughes fully welcomes.

“My personal mission is to help as many people as I can to develop a healthy relationship with food and with their kitchen,” Hughes explained. “I’m teaching people that we must eat to live and not live to eat, teaching them that we can heal our bodies with the food that we put into it and, lastly, that a life of plants over pills is doable.”

A retired broker, Hughes has always envisioned delving off into the ever-so-competitive world of entrepreneurship and sensed that she would ultimately utilize her immeasurable gifts and talents to create a credible business Mid-Southerners would come to embrace.

Mission accomplished for this vibrant, progressive businesswoman, whose entrepreneurial skills have been nothing short of amazing.

To her credit, they still are.

ROUND OF APPLAUSE — Widely regarded as one the Mid-South’s finest vegan establishments, Hughes said amongst the trends she loves about her business is bringing smiles to the faces of her customers/clients, all the while promoting the significance of living and savoring a healthy lifestyle through good ole Southern soul food.

“I would say that I was always a go-getter,” Hughes said the divine purpose for which she has been through her rising endeavor. “God blessed me with a myriad of talents, and I knew He did that for a reason. I knew early on that I wanted to work for myself if I stood any chance at leaving a legacy laced in financial freedom for the generations that would follow me.”

A business venture that has steadily reaped considerable success since it went into full operations a little more than two years ago, Hughes credits her grandmother, the late Earnestine Hughes, for greatly inspiring her to diligently fortify her God-orchestrated passion as a health and wellness professional.

“She was known throughout the city for her food and desserts,” Hughes said, recalling her grandmother’s awe-inspiring legacy. “Some were even sold in restaurants around Memphis.”

THE PROVERBS 18:16 AFFECT — Interestingly, Hughes once was afforded the golden opportunity to serve as the personal chef to renowned comedian/actor, Bruce Bruce, during the entertainer’s appearance in Memphis for a show.

Interestingly, Hughes once was afforded the golden opportunity to serve as the personal chef to renowned comedian/actor, Bruce Bruce, during the entertainer’s appearance in Memphis for a show.

And, although several scheduled events involving her business have been postponed amid the COVID-19 pandemic, Hughes is thoroughly convinced her The Vegan Mom’s venture’s best and brightest days are well ahead of it.

Having amassed a wave of Mid-South media coverage — Hughes has appeared twice on Bluff City Life, The YAMS Talk Show, 88.5 With John Best and Grind City Media With Chris Vernon — The Vegan Mom had become a full-fledged business after Hughes had engaged in what is known as 40-day liquid only fast.

“My business started the day the fast ended,” Hughes said.

FERVENT PRAYERS ANSWERED

LEADING BY EXAMPLE — “My personal mission is to help as many people as I can to develop a healthy relationship with food and with their kitchen,” Hughes explained. “I’m teaching people that we must eat to live and not live to eat, teaching them that we can heal our bodies with the food that we put into it and, lastly, that a life of plants over pills is doable.”

For Hughes, it proved to be just the kind of life-altering spiritual revelation she needed that has fervently driven her to her purpose.

Her divine purpose, to put it more precisely.

“It is my mission to inspire others to take their health back…to live their best life now” Hughes said. “I believe that, because I battled hypertension for 20 years and diabetes for three months…yes, three months to show others that we don’t have to wear the illness badge, but through proper dieting and experience we can rock the healed badge, and I will be on this wall until my work is done.”

Just as good ole grandma had inspired her to.

Rest her beloved soul.
