SWEET TOOTH SENSATION: Mid-South businesswoman Tamika Heard’s Butteriffic Bakery & Café generating a sustained national presence

Andre Johnson January 26, 2023 5 min read

She considers a field before she buys or accepts it — expanding her business prudently — with her profits, she plants fruitful vines in her vineyard. (Proverbs 31:16 Amplified Bible)

SIMPLY TERRIFIC

WE LIT NATIONALLY, MANE — Memphian Tamika Heard’s Butteriffic Bakery & Café has become a household name not just in the Mid-South, but across the country.

As far as her chosen line of work goes, Tamika Heard made certain to closely observe her parents.

So much, in fact, that her long-awaited entrepreneurial ambition has become a life-altering reality.

“I’ve always liked to bake and when my parents opened their bakery in 1999,” Heard told Making Headline News during a recent interview. “I didn’t hesitate to get involved.”

To her credit, Heard would ultimately emerge as fixture for her family baking venture, a trend that lasted for nearly two decades.

CHECK ‘EM OUT — Located 488 S. 2nd Street in the heart of Downtown Memphis, Heard’s Butteriffic Bakery & Café officially opened for operations two years ago.

“After 18 years of baking with the family business, I decided to open my own bakery,” Heard recalls. “I like having my own bakery because I can be as creative as I’d to like be.”

For what’s it worth, Heard’s Butteriffic Bakery & Café has become a household name, not just in the Mid-South, but across the country.

REAPING STEADY GROWTH

MOVIN’ ON UP — Heard said plans are currently in the works to move into another facility as Butteriffic will be vacating its downtown location by month’s end.

For Heard, 45, a native Memphian, the remarkably brilliant immeasurable strides she’s making as one of area’s finest bakers is massive sign of things to come.

The former chief marketing officer for Makeda’s Cookies — which is located is Downtown Memphis — Heard has taken her distinctly unique baking expertise and, much to her delight, has set herself a part from other baking establishments.

Located 488 S. 2nd Street in the heart of Downtown Memphis, Heard’s Butteriffic Bakery & Café officially opened for operations two years ago.

Fortunately for the Memphis White Station High graduate, her baking company is steadily generating a national presence.

“I haven’t been many places, but my cookies have traveled as far as Qatar (in the Middle East) and many places in the United States,” Heard told MHN. “Our mission is to create Butteriffic experiences, one dessert at a time by using quality ingredients and providing excellent customer service.”

A popular Mid-South establishment that offers a wide range of delectable and mouth-watering treats, Butteriffic’s bestsellers are The Butteriffic Holiday Box, Large Butter Cookie Jars, as well as its Butteriffic Dozen Assorted Cookies.

Interestingly enough, Butteriffic customarily ships its products to consumers nationwide.

FULFILLING HER PURPOSE

SHE’S JUST WARMING UP — For Heard, 45, a native Memphian, the remarkably brilliant immeasurable strides she’s making as one of area’s finest bakers is massive sign of things to come.

As Heard explained, she is mostly appreciative to her solid supporters, who have diligently helped pave the way to her sustained success as a rising entrepreneur.

“I’m inspired by my parents, of course,” Heard said. “Makeda’s Cookies is a community staple in the city. I also admire Debbie Fields of Mrs. Fields Cookies. She had a vision, and she went for it just like my parents, and I admire those who stepped out on faith.”

Heard said plans are currently in the works to move into another facility as Butteriffic will be vacating its downtown location by month’s end.

DESSERT ANYONE?

BRANCHING OUT BIG TIME — The former chief marketing officer for Makeda’s Cookies — which is located is Downtown Memphis — Heard has taken her distinctly unique baking expertise and, much to her delight, has set herself a part from other baking establishments.

“I’m hoping to do a soft opening for Valentine’s Day and a grand opening in March to celebrate our second year of being Butteriffic,” Heard said. “We’ll also host more spoken word events at the new location.”

Besides overseeing the day-to-day operations of a popular Mid-South baking establishment that boasts a national presence, Heard operates Local Vibes Only, a YouTube channel that also serves as a podcast.

“We’ll also be amping up our youth organization, 901 Kidpreneurs, to help assist young people who want to bring value to the marketplace,” Heard said. “The late great Maya Angelou said, ‘Once we learn, we’re obligated to teach.’

FROM HUMBLE BEGINNINGS — “I’ve always liked to bake and when my parents opened their bakery in 1999,” Heard told Making Headline News during a recent interview. “I didn’t hesitate to get involved.”

“I’m obligated to teach all that I learn in hopes that someone will be inspired to follow their dreams and do something amazing. I want people to say, ‘Because of you, I didn’t quit.’”

Appropriately and eloquently uttered by someone who made certain to closely observe her parents.

So much, in fact, that her long-awaited entrepreneurial ambition has become a life-altering reality.
