According to data compiled by Making Headline News via the Ballard Brief, approximately 22 percent of U. S. women have experienced intimate partner violence during their lifetime.
According to report, other factors include:
- Less than 40 percent of women actively seek help in domestic violence situations.
- Obstacles such as healthcare reporting and distance from state resources prevent many abused women from seeking needed help.
- The physical and mental consequences of domestic violence hinder women’s ability to regain confidence in leaving an abusive situation.
- About one-third of women leaving an abusive situation report IPV (Intimate Partner Violence) revictimization and increased intensity of violence.
- Childhood education and awareness of domestic violence can combat the cycle of generational and cultural domestic violence and,
- Notable and effective practices exist; however, further analysis will be needed to reveal potential solutions for scale on a nationwide level.

Moreover, according to the Ballard Brief report, the United States over the last century has worked to confront this social issue by implementing laws to combat gender inequality.
In 1920, for instance, the passing of the 18th Amendment began to equalize views on gender. Furthermore, as the feminist movement began to grow in the 1960s, a series of laws were made to protect women against sexual harassment in the workplace and eventually domestic violence.
However, while lawmakers continue to pass new legislation intended to protect women in their various roles, domestic violence remains a problem for women across the United States.
As for their forthcoming conference, Woods and Roquemore said plans are currently in the works to ensure their inaugural event is a success.
The Picking Up Broken Pieces From Internal Generational Abuse Conference will feature five notable presenters, headlined by Leon Walker, the assembly’s keynote speaker.
Other speakers are: Pastor Faye Thomas, Minister Aaron Mitchell, Fran Patterson, CEO and Co-Founder of Precious Gifts of Life, and author Sandra Moye.

October is recognized nationally as Domestic Violence Awareness Month.
This awareness month has evolved from the Day of Unity in October 1981, observed by the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence (NCADV), with the intent to connect advocates across the nation who were working to end violence against women and their children.
Common themes of advocacy activities across the nation include: mourning those who have died because of domestic violence, celebrating those who have survived, and connecting those who work to end violence.
In October 1987, the first Domestic Violence Awareness Month was observed and the initiation of the first national domestic violence toll-free hotline. In 1989, the U.S. Congress passed Public Law 101-112 designating October of that year as National Domestic Violence Awareness Month.
Such legislation has passed every year since with NCADV, providing key leadership in this effort. Each year, the Day of Unity is celebrated the first Monday of Domestic Violence Awareness Month.
