HEALTH IS WEALTH

For Iris McDuffie, it could be appropriately described an intriguingly fascinating path, one that has altered the overall landscape of her life.
For what it’s worth, it hasn’t been a simple one by any stretch of the imagination.
“I did not choose this path because it was easy,” McDuffie, during a recent interview with Making Headline News, recalling the rash of memorable development surrounding her featured business endeavor. “I chose it because it was necessary.”
Indeed, it was for McDuffie, the mastermind behind Nutrition I.A.M. LLC, her credible Atlanta-based health and wellness venture operates largely as a consulting service, one that customarily provides Medical Nutrition Therapy (MNT) for individuals, as well as Behavioral Health Nutrition Assessments, and Nutrition Counseling with the aim of preventing chronic disease states and the promotion of good health.

According to McDuffie, MNT is an evidenced based approach to the treatment of chronic disease states while Behavioral Health Nutrition Assessments are specifically designed to evaluate behavioral and mental health issues that could potentially lead to the development of chronic disease states.
“As an African-American woman in the field of dietetics, I represent just three percent of all Registered Dietitians in the United States,” McDuffie told MHN.

Such a figure, by her standards, previously brought about a sense of isolation or, as McDuffie points out, “a reminder that the rooms I walked into were not built with me in mind.”
Nevertheless, the longtime health and wellness professional said, that small percentage over time subsequently became something else entirely.
“It became fuel,” McDuffie says without hesitation. “Growing up, I saw firsthand how chronic diseases like diabetes carved deep, painful patterns through Black families and communities. I watched people I loved navigate a healthcare system that did not always see them, hear them, or understand the cultural realities shaping their choices. I saw the statistics, but more importantly, I saw the faces behind them.”
In putting it rather bluntly, McDuffie said, “I knew I could not look away.
My competitive drive did not come from wanting to outrun others. It came from wanting to outrun the limitations placed on my community. It came from refusing to accept that preventable diseases should continue to steal our health, our joy, and our longevity. It came from a vision that kept tugging at me, whispering that I could be part of the change.”
Such an awe-inspiring vision began with McDuffie exercising her faith.
“I stepped forward,” McDuffie, a native of Bennettsville, South Carolina, said. “I became a Registered Dietitian not just to educate, but to advocate. Not just to treat, but to empower. Not just to break into a field where few looked like me, but to widen the door for those who will come after me.”
PROMOTING HEALTH

For her valiant efforts, McDuffie’s immeasurable work in chosen profession is rooted in what she deems “cultural understanding” or, as she acknowledged, “evidence-based nutrition and a deep commitment to health equity.”
“I am here to help rewrite the narrative — one person, one family, one community at a time,” McDuffie said. “When propelled by a vision, you cannot ignore. You do not build a career. You build a mission.”
Armed with more than two decades of experience in her line work, McDuffie doesn’t shy away from the notion that she’s enthusiastic about educating her community on ways to better manage their disease instead of letting the disease manage them.
“As an African American Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN), my mission is to uplift, empower, and inspire others daily by embodying representation, compassion, and cultural humility,” McDuffie said. “I am committed to advancing health equity, honoring the resilience of my community, and creating spaces where every individual feels seen, valued, and capable of thriving. Through my work, I strive to dismantle bad theories, elevate diverse voices, and cultivate a legacy of wellness, leadership, and possibilities for generations to come.”
